Hey... Im getting ready to open a online brokerage account by the end of this month after some research. I was just wondering if anyone had some insights to which ones should be looked at.

If you are really going to do it all yourself, just go with a cheaper big name. Transaction times are similar and your going to get similar service without any frills. If you want extra research options and the ability to pay extra to talk to a broker every now and then, look for one that may cost a little more but offers those services. Scottrade, Etrade, and USAA offer online brokerage services. USAA would be provide the most in other services but cost you the most per trade and you can only use it if you have USAA membership. Scottrade I liked better than Etrade. They (Scottrade) have some local service centers you can visit, too... I know there is one up in Annapolis.

Etrade and scottrade are two that I have been looking at lately. I don't really want to be paying for wired transfers with scottrade though considering im starting a little bit at a time. I like my electronic transfers I hate to have to send a check instead every month to scottrade or pay $20 to transfer money. Is thier any other big differences or are they all pretty much running the same lines of each other?

I use ScottTrade but they don't allow online funding, which is an annoyance. You have to go down to the bank and wire the funds into your account. They used to allow online funding but there was some security issue and they changed it.

I like it that they have local human offices because when I started I had a LOT of questions. The guy at the Rockville office walked me through everything and has been great to work with.

If you need to quick fund, you can stop at one of their offices just so you don't have to be impatient waiting for the first check to arrive so you can "play". If you are starting out, you should be sending checks instead of paying anything extra. Think of it this way... if $20 bothers you to send money in, then you need to be playing it small by check and without a margin account anyway. Do not margin!

The only reason you would need quick funding is if you are trying pay off margin before its called. Even transfering won't allow you to get money in to make a big trade the same day.

I went with firstrade to trade stocks with. I was also choosing between etrade and scottrade. I chose firstrade over those because scottrade does not have electronic funding and I just like the conveinence of doing it all online and not paying for wired transfers. I didn't choose etrade because it charges 40 dollars in maintence fees every quarter if you don't meet certain requirements.

Firstrade is 6 something a trade and thats basically it, so far so good I haven't run across any problems yet...
