Online Scanner

Stop Staring!!!!!
I have been considering feeding the audio from my scanner over the net. I have done it before but am now a little behind the times as far as the best & cheapest (free is better) way to do it.

Previously I had fed through a Yahoo Groups Chat Room. It was free and very easy but I found that many users had a hard time getting things to work on their end. Plus Yahoo had a tendancy of booting people out of the chat room randomly and it did the same to my feed PC and if I were not around it would not automatically reconnect. So the feeds would be offline until I returned to the computer. After this I used TEAMSPEAK but that is generally a service whose servers have to be rented. I really am not trying to pay so others can listen to my scanners. I am a nice guy but not that nice.

I have about 20 scanners and 6 computers that I can play with but need a way to get the audio to the net. Ideally I would like a seaparate feed for 2-3 scanner simultaneously and some sort of live chat interface (voice and/or text) would be great.

I live in Lexington Park so can easily put up a feed from St. Marys as well as Calvert plus some other stuff like marine, aircraft, and such.

My main computer is a Dell XPS Gen 5 (Dual Processor w/ 4 gig of RAM. But I really was not trying to set this up as a server as I am on DSL and I doubt I would have the badwidth to handle feeding multiple audio streams to multiple users. Plus my 'puter skills are not savy enough to where I would feel comfortable allowing others into my PC network to listen.

Anyway, any advice toward this end would be most appreciated. Any offers of assistance when the time comes to set it up would be most welcome as well.

Well,

I was hoping to get somewhere with this today.
I would ask VRAI and David if this would be something they would be willing to support as a service of SOMD... or at the least if you find a way to do it, at least provide a link on the SOMD frontpage..

Just tried to do it in a Yahoo Group. Yahoo has evidently killed the voice chat feature. I was going to set that up as a quick fix until something better came along. No Joy

May I suggest Shoutcast? Its been awhile for me, but when I used to stream music, there was a button to push to talk, as if u're DJing. No setup for end-users. Although # of listeneners is dependent on the quality of your streams which is limited by your upload.

Shoutcast is an option. I guess I am just a little spoiled by the way I use to do it. It was great having a live text chat interface for those listening to the feed to use to chit-chat about what might be going on.

TEAMSPEAK is doable but it is a paid for service. Yahoo Groups seems to have disabled their voice chat feature.
