Oooh that smell...

Caught a whiff of a nasty, fishy pungent odor yesterday while driving on 235, Mechanicsville area. Lasted for miles. (Actually, pondered the thought that I p*ssed someone off and a dead animal was under the hood). Finally caught up to a dump truck that was responsible for the odor. Makes me wonder if he was hauling dead bodies. Worst smell I have ever witnessed. Thoughts?

Road kill. County scoops them up and puts them in a dump truck.

I'm somewhat amazed people don't know that. I have friends up around Carlisle where a lot of Marylanders have moved over the last twenty years or so and they couldn't believe the Letters to the Editor and screaming at Township Supervisor meetings where the new people were demanding they "do something" about the road kill.

For those who don't know, Pennsylvania generally follows the Circle of Life method of managing animals hit by vehicles.

Most people don’t know you can report road kill on the county website. They will come and scoop it up. I believe they make fertilizer with road kill.

When I got here 30+ years ago there was a guy who did collect roadkill. He tossed them in the back of a 10 wheel truck and drove them down to Florida or Georgia to a gator farm. He stopped when the county wanted to charge him for it.
