Opinions orthopedic surgeon

So my boy got hurt pretty bad playing football Friday night. He will require surgery on his elbow to reconstruct a detatched ligament. Saw Dr. Travis of Southern Maryland Orthopedic Saturday morning for the preliminary diagnosis. He ordered an MRI and we saw him Monday morning and he broke the news. I have asked in a small circle for opinions on Dr. Travis and have heard nothing bad at all. Now I am opening the circle to a larger audience since they scheduled surgery for Wednesday morning.

I could drag the boy all over Maryland looking but how do you judge? Better web site, the guy looks more doctor-ish? Absent real feedback it is tough to choose. Right now I am leaning toward Dr. Travis but want to be sure. The boy has a few colleges looking at him for football and he is young so I don't want to risk it.

That group is good. Travis is well respected. I didn't have him work on me, but his associate Cox did my shoulder and both knees. No issues or complaints whatever. My understanding is that Travis is even better.

Pete... http://calvertortho.com/about/

Dr. Cirillo has operated on my wife twice for 2 different injuries, and Dr. Beck has operated on my son once for a sports related injury. Both are outstanding surgeons.

I have heard he is good too. There are a ton of choices between here and Annapolis. I really don't have time to go to all of them. Like I siad unless I get info to the contrary I am leaning toward Travis and keeping it local so his rehab can be monitored.

Good choice.

My advice would be to stick with the group you are with, I do not know Dr. Travis, but have used Dr. Cox of that group twice. He was very straight forward, but the main thing is that you could really talk with him and he could talk to you.

So GWGuy since you have all this faith in Dr. Cox who by the way is my doctor, would you from the bottom of your heart recommend him for hip replacement? I'm supposed to have that sooner or later but I was up in the air whether to check around or let him do it. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you

That's a tough one. The procedures I had done by Cox were laproscopic, removing some excess material in the shoulder and fixing the meniscus in the knees. Minor by comparison to a whole hip replacement. I also don't know anyone personally that has had a hip procedure done by Cox. If it were me, I'd be asking a zillion questions and would also be getting inputs on and from other surgeons.

I loved Dr. Travis. Started in the ER with him he was the Ortho on call when my son fell and fractured his elbow. He was great with my son. After we got him all fixed up my husband then saw him for carpal tunned surgery on both hands.

I agree with you -if you haven't had any bad reviews at all and only good, it would be better to be local, especially for rehab, etc.

I would like to throw my hat into the ring for Dr. Cirillo, as well. I have no experience with Dr. Cirillo as far as ortho surgery goes, but my mother went to him & he is the one who found the cancer in her hip. (He sent her straight to WHC the next day) I have nothing negative to say about him or his practice.

Foxhound's family has been to him as well, and I have heard nothing but praise.
