I decided to do a walk-about on the lower forty; checking for any downed trees and damage from the storm. I discovered a strange- wet, jelly like "Orange Goo" growing on the side of a cedar tree-YIKES!!
Did some research and found out this alien looking fungus is "cedar apple rust" (Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae).
It's an interesting fungus-it has to go back and forth between hosts (cedars and apples) to survive. Which is why the old timey remedy, if you're trying to grow apples, is to just cut down all the cedars! I think this finally explains why my 2 apple trees bear blighted fruit!
Do you have this on any cedar tree on your property?
I can't seem to attach a pix of the tree in my yard but, this is what the stuff looks like!
