Had to take our Boomer to VCA at 4 a.m. this morning. Thought it might have been a foreign body blockage. Xray says no, possible pancreatitis indicated by the blood work. Recommended an ultrasound to check. Xrays were hazy, not sure why, possible fluid. Vet called. Not pancreatitis. Boomer has an enlarged spleen, enlarged kidney and a blood clot in his vena cava vein (leads to the heart) that is 8 cm in size. They believe he has a form of kidney disease that is making him lose protein in his urine. Prognosis for this is usually 1-3 months at best. At this point we are not sure he will be able to come home for what will be his final days/month. Boomer is my husbands bud and what makes this harder is he is not here to be with him. The girls and I are going to visit Boomer today.

:huggy::huggy::huggy:: I'm so sorry, losing pets is the worse. Will they let you bring him home at all? Even if it is to go cross the rainbow bridge?

Vet said it's too early to tell if he will be well enough to come home. I don't want him to suffer but at the same time I'm hoping he could hold on for at least a couple weeks so my husband can be home to say good bye. I guess if it's meant to be it will.

Awww...sending healing prayers your way. Lots of hugs to Boomer !! Do you have him at MASH, I know there are a few VCA in the area but wasn't sure which one you were at?

It's in Waldorf off Post Office Rd.

Okay, I've been there. I had to take my dog there, shortly before her passing due to spinal cord cancer, and my vet told advised me to seek a specialist, one NOT at that hospital. Which is what we did. MASH is the BEST place around. Just a thought.

I had my 1 year-old at MASH in Calvert a week ago today. I know the gut wrenching worry you are going through right now. My pup is fine, but it's still a mystery to MASH, and her regular Vet as to what happened. Maybe Boomer will pull out of it, and pass the clot. Are they trying to bust the clot with medication?

I don't believe so. Vet said even if it passes there's still the issue of kidney disease and enlarged spleen. His health will continue to deteriorate due to loss of protein. There's nothing they can do with that. We're leaving soon so the girls can visit. The vet had suggested waiting 24 hrs at which point they will check his kidney values.

Just returned from the vet. His condition had actually deteriorated since I brought him in this morning. While we were there, he may have threw part of his clot. The vet came in and could not find a pulse in his hind legs. He was suffering so we made the decision to let him pass on. I called my husband and it broke my heart to hear him talk to Boomer over the phone and to listen to my girls say goodbye. Bud was a great dog, smart and funny and will truly be missed everyday. We love you Boomer. You'll forever be in our hearts.

I'm so sorry to hear your news, getbent. We went through something very similar two weeks ago with our rat terrier, trying so hard to save her, finding out there was nothing we could do. The decision to finally let go of her was heart wrenching, as I know it was for you. To be honest, I am still teary eyed at times. You know you did what was best and it's time to think about all the loving years you and your family had with your pup.

I had so many sympathetic friends, who said such kind things. They really made losing my best buddy of 11 years much easier.

A dog loving friend sent me this youtube video and it helped me greatly, I hope it brings you some comfort, too.
