NBC 4 just showed a picture of a plane. "Planes like this F-16 fighter" were protecting our cities. The plane was an F/A-18. :loser:

I've seen things like that before. I was watching a show on the military channel listing the top 10 warships and no.3 was the Ticonderoga class crusier. Half of the video footage was of Spruance class destroyers.

They probably used stock footage and figured that the average schmuck viewer wouldn't know the difference. What they don't count on enlightened current or former military members watching and throwing the :bs:

I saw the same thing during the Gulf War. Back then, in one news report they were discribing an aerial bombing mission in Iraq showing an F-14 Tomcat!

I'm not so sure I ever heard of the Tomcat performing an air-to-ground combat role back then. I thought it's role was air interdiction and ship/fleet defense?

They did both SEAD (suppression of enemy air defenses) and SCUD strikes as well as air superiority roles. The Tomcat was pretty good at air to mud fighting.

Was that dropping bombs or firing off air-to-surface missiles? I'm pretty sure they were discribing aerial bombardment.

Bombs as well as rockets/missiles. We certified a lot of stores on the Tomcat right before the heavy hitting started as well as recertifying the entire enventory for the re-winged A-6s.

Actually the Tomcat was/is able to carry and deliver free-fall bombs.

OK, I wasn't aware of that. The Tomcat IS retired now, am I right?

We retired it but there might still be one or two functioning birds left in Iran.

I'll never forget Ron Reagan on MSNBC's "Connected Coast to Coast" asking a military analyst during the May 2005 evacuation of D.C.:
"Excuse me Col., but what is a Black Hawk?"

There were 4 F-16's flying in formation over the Pentagon today, with two in trail. Awesome sight! I also saw my first F-22 today as it was coming in to Andrews.
