Outer Banks Traffic Yesterday

Sonster went down to Kitty Hawk yesterday with some family friends. They have been down there many times. Yesterday they left Huntingtown, at 0800, and didn't get to Kitty Hawk until 5:00 pm. 9 hours one way, said the traffic and backups were unbelievable.

Wow! My experience has been leave around 10-11 AM. Never had that kind of problem. Usually 5+ hours.

I remember it used to take almost 8 hours 20 years ago and the slowdown was mainly after getting off the interstate.. Then they upgraded the road ways and added two new exits. Hasn't taken me more than 4.5 to 5 hours in years - and that's with repeated potty breaks for the chaps. I wonder if there was some road work or an accident or something.

Went there the last 2 summers. Never rent Sat. to Sat. If you aren't there by noon the backup is horrendous. Find a Sun. to Sun. rental & cruise right in. Or leave late and get in after dark on Saturday.

It takes me at least that long to get to OBX because I have to stop to pee, eat, and shop numerous times. I spend at least an hour and a half at the Goodwill in Tappahannock.

My in-laws had a place in OBX from the 80's until early 2000 sometime and I never remember traffic being bad in the upteen times we visited... in fact, I want to say we made it in 4 - 5 hours tops back then. I'm in OBX now and the traffic was brutal on the way down - 20 mile back-up coming in across the bridge on Saturday. I cannot believe how much this area has built up since visiting last and how much of the beach is gone now from storms over the years. I'm staying just a few houses down from the Pier located behind Hilton Garden Inn in a house on the beach. I don't remember which storm it was but the news filmed that pier getting destroyed at one time... but it is all rebuilt now. Yesterday's rip made surfing nearly impossible and there were many rescues for much of the late morning until early evening because of it. Good thing I came in after I almost ate my board or I might have been one of them. :ohwell:

The popularity of this area has grown by leaps and bounds We met just over the Nice Bridge on the Virginia side at 10 a.m. and it was nearly 5 by the time we got here.... so 7 hours. We only made short stops because we have our dog and kitten with us.

I lived in Kitty Hawk for 11 years from 89 to 2000. You learned quick to never go food shopping or leave the island on a Saturday.
