LEONARDTOWN, MD – Superintendent of Schools, Dr. J. Scott Smith, would like to announce the outstanding employees that have been recognized for their service and dedication to St. Mary’s County Public Schools.
Ms. Deborah Urich, ISIC Paraeducator at Greenview Knolls Elementary School, has been selected as the Educational Support Professional of the Year award winner. The Educational Support Professional of the Year award was established in 2009 to recognize the essential role support staff has on the success of the school system by fostering a positive learning environment for students. Ms. Urich has been employed with St. Mary’s County Public Schools for twenty-two years.
Ms. Jennifer Cord, 5th Grade Teacher at White Marsh Elementary School, has been selected as the representative from St. Mary’s County Public Schools for the Maryland Teacher of the Year program. Ms. Cord has been employed with St. Mary’s County Public Schools for twenty-one years. She will compete against other teachers from across the State of Maryland for the Maryland Teacher of the Year Award. Ms. Cord holds a Master’s Degree in Human Resources Development from Towson University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary/Middle School Mathematics Education from Frostburg State University.
Ms. Tracy Harding, Social Studies Teacher at Leonardtown High School, has been selected as the representative from St. Mary’s County Public Schools for the Washington Post Teacher of the Year program. Ms. Harding has been employed with St. Mary's County Public Schools for six years. She was a finalist for the Washington Post Teacher of the Year Award competing against other teachers from public and private schools throughout the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. Ms. Harding holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science & Psychology from East Carolina University and is pursuing a Master’s of Political Science at American Public University System.
Mr. Mike Egan, Principal of the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center, has been selected as the representative from St. Mary's County Public Schools for the Washington Post Principal of the Year program. Mr. Egan has been employed with St. Mary's County Public Schools for twenty-seven years, the last five in the role of principal. He was a finalist for the Washington Post Principal of the Year Award competing against other principals from public and private schools throughout the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. Mr. Egan holds a Master’s Degree in Human Resources Development from Towson University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Jason Hayes, Supervisor of Secondary Science, has been selected as the Leader of Excellence award winner. The Leader of Excellence award was established in 2018 to recognize the essential role administrative or supervisory staff has on the success of the school system by fostering cooperation between the school or school system and the community. Mr. Hayes has been employed with St. Mary’s County Public Schools for twenty-three years, the last six in the role of supervisor. Mr. Hayes holds a Master’s Degree in Geoscience from Mississippi State University, a Master’s Degree in Leadership in Teaching from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and a Bachelor’s Degree in Earth/Space Science Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, May 5-11, 2019, we not only thank our teachers, but principals, administrative and support staff as well. Every employee makes an important contribution to the success of our students. Ms. Urich, Ms. Cord, Ms. Harding, Mr. Egan and Mr. Hayes will represent the school system along with all nominees for the Educational Support Professional of the Year and Outstanding Educator, and other St. Mary’s County Public Schools’ staff at the Staff Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Great Mills High School, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
