call and ask the vet they might be able to help you out with what the dog can and can't have.

There are two that I'm familiar with, Metacam and Rimadyl. They're non-steroidal and are commonly used to treat arthritis. They are metabolized through the liver so it is VERY important to test the dog's liver and kidney functions BEFORE putting them on either of these meds or others of the same type. Elderly dogs can be prone to kidney and liver function problems.

I'd also be sure to watch your dog closely and have the kidney and liver function tested while on the medication.

There are several homeopathic remedies you may want to try and see if your dog responds to that method of treatment. You can google "homeopathic remedies arthritis dogs" and there's a good amount of information.

I have a 14 yr old dalmatian. He is on rimadyl and tramadol. I thought he was having problems with his hips but xray showed it is an issue with his lower spine. He has lost alot of muscle in his back legs. Asprin helped for the first couple of years. When he needed something stronger we had to stop asprin for a few days then get blood and urine labwork before starting the rimadyl. He also has bladder stones which dals are prone to.
Good luck with everything!

My six y/o Boxer girl has a problem with her back legs due to arthritis. I started giving her glucosomine/ chondroitin as an experiment - it worked! If I forget to give her a pill she starts limping again, then stops when I resume.
You never know it might work for your old poochy.
Be very careful about liver problems, as others have warned.
Good luck.

My 12 yr old miniature pinscher is on rimadyl for cervical disc disease and it has helped a lot! I know that some people have had bad experiences with this drug but Gobie is acting half his age again and has much more quality of life.

I hope you do take your pooch in to be seen rather than guessing at his problem (if you haven't already).
