painting over primer...

I want to repaint some furniture with a zebra stripe pattern for my daughter's room. I went to paint black stripes directly over the current white finish, but the paint didn't stick.

My question is... if I sand this thing down and prime it, does that mean I'm going to have to paint both the black and white stripes? Or will it hurt to paint only the black stripes over the white primer and leave the white primer exposed?

Anyone have experience with this?

What type of paint is the current finish? Water based latex, oil based? Does the furniture have a special coating applied? What type of paint are you using for the stripes?

I honestly don't know. I got it from someone else. It appears it just has a coat of primer and paint over wood. I don't see anything that would indicate any type of lacquer or coating. I can't tell if it's oil based or water based, although there's no oily gasoline smell to it...

For the black stripes, I bought some semi-gloss black latex paint.

Black latex does not cover well. You will need several coats. If you tape off the stripes you can lightly sand using a scratch pad. This may or may not help depending on the type of paint used on the chair.

She's a little kid. :lmao: And besides, our kid has paw prints on his wall so who am I to talk? :lmao:

Sleuth, when I paint furniture, I use water based acrylics, rather than latex. IMO latex is really only good on walls. I recently refinished some oak chairs. Light sanding, a coat of acrylic primer followed by acrylic paint in your color of choice.
