From the creative mind of Guillermo del Toro, director of Blade II and Hellboy, springs Pan's Labyrinth, an ingenious film following a child (played with innocence and charm by soulful junior-thespian Ivana Baquero) who enters a fairy tale to escape the horrors of life in Francisco Franco's post-Civil War Spain, including her stepfather, a sadistic capitán ordered to stamp out a rebel militia.
A definitive example of magic realism, an artistic style in which magical elements appear in an otherwise realistic setting, the film is an effective fantasy adventure and political polemic. So deft is del Toro's blending of the disparate genres, so bewitching is his direction, and so engaging is his screenwriting, this is without a doubt destined to be his magnum opus.
And though this is first and foremost a showcase of directorial masterfulness, the stellar cast's contribution must also be praised, especially Sergi López's villianous turn, which is in the same league as Anthony Hopkins' performance in The Silence of the Lambs.
Overall, Pan's Labyrinth represents Guillermo del Toro's graduation from up-and-coming genre master to creative giant, a Spielbergian force each and every film fan should cherish. A perfect film. Highly recommended.
