DELTONA, Fla. - Even though the dishes, garbage and dirty laundry were piling up, homeowners Cat and Harlan Barnard were getting no help from their two children.

After begging and pleading with their 17-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter to help out around the house, the Barnards decided they were fed up. So they went on strike — and moved out to the front yard.

"This was our last-ditch effort," Cat Barnard said.

Since Monday morning, the Barnards have lived in a tent in their front yard, going inside the house only to use the restroom or shower. The couple sits on lawn chairs and roasts marshmallows over a hibachi.

I can't say I blame them at all!!! Some kids have no respect for their parents or others. Make them take care of theirselves for a little while and see how much they like that.

I'm sorry. I'd throw the little basturds out in the yard and I'd live in the house. If child services comes along, and threatens to take the kids, TAKE THEM. The 17 year old is out as soon as he/she turns 18. Bye Bye. Play by the rules or hit the bricks.

exactly! I heard this story last night and all I could think of was, its my friggen house! I'd put the kids azzes out in the tent...show them what an inconvienence life could really be. Prove to them just how lucky they are to have roof over their heads and actual clothes to pick up and chores to do. I remember what it was like to be a teen, and if my mom/dad had moved out front in a tent..I would have still been partying hearty-doing whatever the heck I wanted to in the house and I'd be in a better mood cause I wouldn't have had the constant nagging of the dumbazzes who were now living in the front yard.

These kids are not going to be embarassed. They will probably be thought of as cool by their friends - no parents to hasssle you etc.

Why should anyone have to live in a tent. Take everything out of their rooms except their bed and a desk for homework. There is no law that says you have to provide tvs and other furniture.

Cancel the phone and go to a cell for mom and dad only. Put the TV, computer, etc. in mom & dad's room with a deadbolt lock. I would only leave PB&J, bread, fruit and oatmeal available for them to eat. They could drink water from the tap. Disconnect the stove, remove the toaster(s), microwaves, etc.

As for clothing, well I would buy them 3 pairs of pants and 5 tee shirts all in the ugliest colors I could find. All underwear would be the opposite of what they have now. But they would have to wash their own stuff this way if they don't want to they run out and oh well now you have to wear dirty smelly and ugly clothes instead of just ugly clothes.

You smell funny
Agree with the above two...the parents are just setting themselves up further for losing the war against their punk kids. Sucks for them.

These clowns were on the Jimmy Kimmel (sp?) show tonight and they truly didn’t seem very swift. It is no small wonder that their kids are walking all over them.

I doubt if they are even aware that what they are doing is a violation of the Florida criminal statute, Title XLVI, Chapter 827, Section 827.03, paragraph (3)(a)1. “Neglect of a child” which is defined as "A caregiver's failure or omission to provide a child with the care, supervision, and services necessary to maintain the child's physical and mental health, including, but not limited to, food, nutrition, clothing, shelter, supervision, medicine, and medical services that a prudent person would consider essential for the well-being of the child." Paragraph (3)(a)3 amplifies by stating that, "A person who willfully or by culpable negligence neglects a child without causing great bodily harm, permanent disability, or permanent disfigurement to the child commits a felony of the third degree."

I suspect it won’t be long until the state has to step in to give these parents a clue that what they are doing is not only stupid but against the law and instead of gaining the respect of their kids it could result in a prison sentence of up to 5 years.

Nowadays, a parent can't prove a point to their children without someone coming in to say abuse or negelct. These parents have a great idea, only put the kids out in a tent. Welcome to the real world!

These parents aren't proving a point, but it looks like they are breaking the law as it is written in Florida with their stupid idea. They lost control years ago and now have taken a child's tactic. Who is teaching whom in this situation?

Because, of course, it's so unusual for kids to not want to do chores. So instead of just making the kids clean up after themselves, the stupid parents move into a tent in the yard.

Yeah right.

The parents are humiliating themselves, not the kids. The kids are the victors, their parents are out in the yard thinking that they are teaching their kids a lesson when in reality all they are doing are interviews for any camera crew that comes along. They are looking more and more like the tards that they are and as a kid all they have to do if someone asks about it is say, "Hey, I didn't pick my parents".

And their stupid sign says, "seeking cooperation and respect." How are these morons going to get any respect from their children when they are not teaching them. Moving out of the house leaves the children to do as they please. It doesn't teach them to clean up after themselves. Lead by example and if that doesn't work a good swift kick in the azz should. If neither works, then you've waited too long to implement the discipline. I think such is the case with these two "parents," and I use the term loosely. As I said before, the 17 year old is out the door at 18, maybe that will give the other one the incentive to get better. Permissive parenting. NOT the way to go.
