Parents serve detention with tardy student

Susan and Steven Manis say it was their fault their daughter was late for school so they shared her punishment -- spending an hour with her in detention.

The couple says their 13-year-old daughter, Jessica Dunkley, was being unfairly punished for being late six times in October and November when the family's van wouldn't start.

So when administrators insisted the Pearland Junior High School East seventh-grader would have to spend an hour in detention, they decided to go with her.

"We're more at fault than she is," said Susan Manis, who had appealed the administration's decision.

After the punishment was over, Jessica said it was "a little embarrassing" to have her mom and stepfather in detention with her. But, she said, "I'm proud of them for sticking up for what they believe in."

During the hour, the trio copied two pages from a school handbook about pillars of good citizenship.

The first one, Susan Manis pointed out, is "stand up for your convictions."

I agree that the parents should own up to responsiblity for getting her to school on time... but I'm confused as to why her daughter is so proud of them for "sticking up for what they believe in"... As far as I can tell, they believe they are idjits for not getting her to school on time... what's to be proud of...

Seems like one of their "convictions" is to accept responsibilty for their actions (getting daughter to school late) or inactions (getting pos van fixed). Either way they should be told about those big yellow things that take kids to school  oh yeah a school bus that's it.

or maybe

:shortbus:

WELL...i can say...that we're guilty.... when we take our lil one to school, since she isn't responsible for getting herself there, and it's ME who got her there late....i wish i could serve detention for an hour and throw spitballs and write on the chalkboard as punishment too  I would do it. It's really not fair if it isn't her fault. The parents took responsibility for their actions which is what this is about. Truth be known, the kid shouldn't have served detention at all, If the kid is driving himself, and is late or misses the bus...then that's a horse of a different color. My kiddos have always been driven TO school. It's just something we do, since it's on the way. And now that our driveway is 2 miles long...they are also picked up from the bus in the afternoon.

Same here :lmao:

I felt bad for getting my oldest son in trouble at school about a month ago. I was sitting in the office, and he was standing in line. He was told NOT to talk, but then I was talking to him inside the office door. The teacher yelled to my son to pull a card. I was there for a progress meeting, and I didn't say anything at the time. When we went into the meeting, I appoligized to her and told her that he was talking to me. Of course she didn't count that card.
