BETHESDA, Md. -- Rescue workers are using high-tech listening devices and dogs to try and determine if a man who became trapped under debris when a parking garage under construction at the National Institutes of Health partially collapsed, is still alive.
Montgomery County Fire Department spokesman Pete Piringer called the situation "grave."
Piringer said the collapse happened about 9 a.m. on the campus in Bethesda, Md. The fifth floor of the structure pancaked onto the fourth floor, trapping the victim. <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 align=right border=0><TBODY><TR><TD></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
A dozen or more workers were trapped, and were either escorted out by firefighters or plucked to safety by a cherry picker.
The Montgomery County Fire Department's Urban Search and Rescue Team is assisting with the search.
