When you say you are looking for stone, are you thinking of patio pavers or actual stone from a quarry?

I would try Lowe's or Home Depot. They have building materials and all kinds of seminars and workshops to teach you this stuff.

Here is a video that shows how to do a small stone patio and lists what equipment and materials are needed. I am sure the basic principals hold true for a larger one, and i am sure you could substitute the type of stone used in the video for any stone of your choosing.

I was looking into these awhile ago. They are sort of like the wood flooring that snaps together but it is deck/patio tiles. They recommend putting plastic down if they are going on grass, other then that it seems they can be put on existing deck/patio.
