The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigation Response Team is investigating after a patrol officer discharged his firearm and struck a dog this morning in Oxon Hill.

A group of officers responded to a residence in the 1300 block of Southview Drive shortly before 3:00 am for the report of a dispute. The preliminary investigation reveals that as the officers spoke to one of the residents outside, a large dog suddenly ran out of the home and toward the officers. Fearing for his safety, one of the patrol officers discharged his firearm and struck the dog. Animal Control officers arrived on scene and took the dog for emergency care. None of the officers was hurt. The dog was listed in stable condition.

As is our standard operating procedure, the involved officer was placed on administrative leave. Our Special Investigation Response Team will handle the investigation into the discharge of the officer’s duty weapon. Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to call the Special Investigation Response Team at (301) 856-2660.
