A Prince George’s County Police patrol officer shot a dog on Friday after a member of a construction crew was attacked by that dog and a second dog in Oxon Hill. The dog that was shot was later euthanized by the Prince George’s County Animal Management Division.

The construction worker, an adult female, was bitten twice by two loose Rottweilers in the 700 block of Maury Avenue at approximately 7:00 am. The victim was transported to a hospital where she required stitches to two bite wounds to the leg.

Two PGPD patrol officers responded to the dog attack and immediately began searching for the dogs that were believed to still be roaming the area. The officers were then flagged down by a second construction worker who told them the dogs had just tried to attack him. With help from witnesses, the officers located the dogs in the front yard of a home in the 4900 block of Maury Place at approximately 8:00 am. With the animals in the yard, officers held a perimeter as they waited for Animal Control officers to arrive. At that moment, a resident in a neighboring home walked outside and both dogs left the yard and charged at her. The officers quickly ordered her back indoors for her safety and ran towards the dogs in an effort to get the dogs’ attention away from the resident. The resident managed to run back into her home at which time the dogs then charged towards the two officers. The officers attempted to seek cover but were unable. As the dogs got closer to the officers in a threatening manner, one of the officers shot and wounded one of the dogs.

Prince George’s County Animal Control responded to the scene. The owner of the dogs was located. According to the Prince George’s County Animal Management Division, the owner signed the dog that had been shot over to the control of the Animal Management Division. Testing for rabies was conducted and the dog was later euthanized. The second dog is being held at the County’s Animal Shelter for a ten day quarantine for biting.

As is our standard operating procedure, our Special Investigative Response Team will handle the investigation into the discharge of the officer’s duty weapon.

Prince George’s County Animal Control is handling the investigation into the dogs and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
