Payroll software for household help?

Would anyone know of or have any experience with a good payroll software product?

We're about to hire an in-home companion/caregiver for our aging mom and are looking for an easy way to manage payroll and calculate payroll taxes. Thanks for any input.

All you really need is Quicken Home and Business 2007 (about $70) - money in and money out... my wife says you can get Quicken for Business - that has a 'lite' payroll feature. This should suffice. You could use Quicken and just "label" one of your "money outputs" (payroll) as "Caregiver"...

Quickbooks (About $180) is really for busy small, medium businesses - like invoicing, purchase orders, inventory, sales receipts, letters, memos, accounting reports and payroll. This is a professional package and might be to bulky for you need ???

Quicken Books is great and be sure you understand the proper tax rates to with hold for FIT and SIT. You are also required to withhold Social security taxes and medicare taxes. These need to be submitted to the proper agencies on a monthly basis or you can be charged a late fee penalty.
You may also need to see if you have to pay unemployment as well.
These are required anytime that you pay someone for domestic care of $1000.00 or more per three months.
The only reason I'm telling you this is because I am studying payroll and taxes.

Can she not have the caregiver take care of this on her own? Caregiver can do quarterly taxes themselves. Just wondering.

Quicken Books can be set up to take care of household bills and you can keep a running total. You can also set them up to be able to pay your bills on line and it will keep a record of when payment was made and received. It can be a great tool when used right to have all tax information at hand. You can keep all payments logged into for mortagages, health insurance, home owners insurance, life insurance and any other record you may need. It is also best to make back up copies in case of fire, floods or other natural disasters and keep with other important documents.

As for the caregiver paying the quartely taxes, that fine as long as you have a written contract stating that, because if you do not and they do not pay them then it will come back on the employer. You would also be required by law to issue them a year end 1099 for payments made to them on behalf of your mother. Besure to keep receipts of all payments made to cover you.

Thanks, everyone, for all the input - I'll definitely look into your suggestions.

But I did happen to find ElderCarePay software online. It supports all 50 states, seems easy to use, and the cost is definitely right (less than $150). I'll try the free download and give you a more complete report later.

Thanks again for all the replies!
