PCMCIA Question

Anyone know what the difference is between PCMCIA II & III. Is it like USB where it's the data transfer speed or bus, but the hardware and connection are the same? Is it backwards compatible??

  1. My computer only has a Type II PC Card slot. Is there anyway I can plug III into it?

Sycard Technology offers an extender card that allows Type III cards to be inserted into a Type I or Type II slot. The PCCextend 50A is designed for 16-bit PC cards and the PCCextend 70A is designed for CardBus PC Cards.

  2. Are there any potential problems using these extenders to insert Type III PC cards into a Type II PC Card slot? In many cases computer vendors limit the user to a Type II PC cards slot because the host slot cannot supply enough power for a Type III PC Card. Damage to the PC Card or PC Card host may result.

Depends on the brand, but I believe they are, at least most of the 16-Bit Type II Cards that are DIMM Compliant are backwards compatible to PC100 systems... Not real sure about type III ~sorry. And have never actually installed one, but the mfg could probably answer that.

Well ordering new laptops to use for our comms. but the comms use PCMCIA II cards.. and wondering if the laptops come with PCMCIA III I'd still be able to use it..

I'm out of the desktop support game and not really in the market for a laptop, but that PDF was a good, quick read.

Now if I'm ever asked, which is a good bet given our IT department sometimes, me look so good smarter. So... good karma to Danzig.
