Pediatrician Reccomendation?

I'm looking for a specific type of pediatrician and was hoping someone here could suggest some for me?

Location is either Calvert or Anne Arundel county...and I don't care how big/small the practice is or how long I have to wait or what.

What I do care about is:

1. Supportive of breastfeeding.
2. Knowledgable on intact care (un-circumcised)
3. Receptive to alternate vaccination schedules.
4. Practices pro-active medicine rather than re-active medicine.
5. Respectful, not rushed, etc.

You may laugh and scorn but I'm really tired of being pushed around by pedi's and am hoping that there is someone out there who doesn't tell me that my child will most certainly get sick if I don't give him his 6mo vaccinations that day, or to pull the foreskin back, or that nipple confusion does not exist.

*sigh*.

Can anyone please help?

Note: I'm only looking for a doctor to split up vaccinations, I want my child to be fully vaxed but I just don't want him getting 8 or 9 in a visit. Basically I just want a pedi to respect my rights as a parent and not force me into corners on dumb topics.

I love Bay Shore Pediatrics in Prince Frederick.
Their website -----> index

I am not sure of the vax thing because I have always done my kids on schedule. They are pro vax. That being said I think as long as you plan on full vaccinating they might be open to alternative scheduling. I would call and ask.

I really like the office, the staff, and all the doctors. I never feel rushed, they have awesome hours, (evening walk ins), same day sick appt.

You can make an appt just to talk with the doctors and ask questions. I know when I was pregnant with my first I made such an appt. and they answered everything I had.

:yeahthat: Specifically Dr. Singh, but hear that all 3 docs are wonderful. He actually teaches Baby Basics at the hospital & that's how we first met him, we liked his manner. We also went in just to speak with them while pregnant before deciding if they were the right practice for us. So I'm sure they'd be glad to schedule you for a consultation so you can meet with them.

They also have a wonderful nurse who returns phone calls when parents have concerns between visits. Everyone there (including office staff) is patient & caring. They're supportive of BF. I was having difficulty, they gave me the number of a lactation specialist that works with them. Can't comment on intact care, our son is circumcised.

The one thing I love most about them is that they never make you feel stupid or rushed. As a 1st time Mom, I probably have more questions than experienced Moms do. I always have a list for appts & always leave feeling satisfied with the help I'd been given. Like puggymom said they are pro-vaccine so if you didn't want to vaccinate, they'd tell you to find another doc (their words). But they are very flexible so I doubt they'd have issue with you splitting vaccines up.

I use Dr. Hawit 410-535-3000
I'm not sure what his view is on the things your looking for but I've been very happy with him. He talks and listens to what the kids have to say before the parent, love that about him. I'm sure he would schedule a consult before you commit to seeing him.

I left Silpa and Lukban because of the wait (I know you said that wasn't an issue) and because they rushed through the visit and barely had time to answer my questions.

Are you or your husband active duty? If so, Dr. Modi at the Naval Academy (pediatric clinic there on the grounds) is GREAT about those issues.

If you aren't military... there is a Dr. at Arundel Pediatrics who is good (in Linthicum I believe, so a bit of a drive if you are in Calvert... but worth it for a good doctor). Dr. Alexander is her name, I believe. She breastfed her own children and is a big believer in that, so no issues there. She will let you delay vax - if you choose NOT to vax at all they will ask you to leave the practice though. But they are fine with delaying vaccinations for as long as you feel comfortable with, as long as you eventually DO get the vaccinations.

If you don't mind traveling to St. Mary's, Dr. Dhillon is a great fit for you - I know lots of moms that go there who have uncircumsized boys, who do exteneded breastfeeding, delayed vaccinations, etc. - and he is comfortable with it. Be prepared to wait at his office... but it's worth it if you really want to find a doctor that respects your decisions. He is our pediatrician and I'm pretty happy with him.

I had a friend that used Annapolis Pediatrics and they are VERY pro-vax so they wouldn't be a good fit for you.

just a tiny moment to be off topic...you have been hassled about how to care for an intact penis? Thats so silly to me. I dont have any children (hence no ped suggestion) but I want one in the near future. ..a doc would hassle you about something that is MORE natural than the other option? whoa. Il be on here looking for suggestions too when the time comes i guess..

It's mainly because when these doctors were trained, circumcised boys were mostly what they saw and learned about. Uncircumsized boys were in the minority... so a lot of doctors just don't know much about caring for an uncircumsized boy (and you don't have to do much really... the body self-cleans a lot of times - but some nurses and doctors don't know any better and they retract the foreskin, big no-no)

The 'norm' is slowly changing... I think that circumsized boys are still the majority, but more moms are choosing not to circumsize because they just don't see any reason for it. Many studies have shown it to be purely an 'asthetic' thing - as in, we want our boy to look like Daddy... but why put a baby through a needless procedure when there is no medical reason for it?
(I'm probably going to get tomatoes thrown at me for saying that and start a riot in here)

Another big :yay: for Bayshore Pediatrics and Dr. Singh. We have been going there for several years now and have never had any problems with them. Our wait to be called back is never more than 5-10 minutes (important if there are sick kids in the waiting room). The evening walk-in hours are great. It lets you see your own doctor if your child gets sick late in the day and keeps you out of the dreaded urgent care.

The experience I have had with them that has had the most impact with me is that on 2 different occasions, they came into the office on the weekend to see my child. They usually have a doctor at the hospital doing rounds, but they took time out to arrange to meet me at their office so that I could be seen by them and not have to go to urgent care. To me, this was going way beyond the call of duty and will keep me with their practice for a long, long time.

Good luck with your search. As others have suggested, I would urge you to schedule a consult with them. Any of the doctors in Bayshore are great and I would be (and am) comfortable seeing any of them.

Wow, your post further confirms to me that we made the right decision in choosing them for our son's care. Luckily, our son hasn't been sick yet (knock on wood!) so we haven't had reason to go there other than regular well child visits.

I was more wondering about why a doc would question something like that..or hassle you over it. I would never want a doctor that would hassle me over something like that. Or anything I decided for my own child for that matter. The OP sounds frustrated and I was kinda amazed ped docs would do that..I have heard stories before about peds docs trying to "tell" new parents what to do..and I dont think I would take to that kindly..lol

p.s the circumcise debate a hot topic in my child dev classes. Those that are not circumcised have a tinyy tiny bit higher chance of getting an std because the foreskin can indeed provide excellent growing conditions for bacteria and such (also penile cancer because of these infections).....BUT intact men experience stronger orgasms and often report better sex lives...that's quite a tradeoff..lol

OK great, so I'm even more glad we had our son circumcised. Don't want him to enjoy sex until he's old and married! :killingme
