Permanente Closings Begin

On Thursday, John Haywood regretfully told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the FDA guidelines made the reopening of a self-serve restaurant too difficult to implement. All 97 restaurants will now be closing, putting 4,400 people out of work.

“The FDA had previously put out recommendations that included discontinuing self-serve stations, like self-serve beverages in fast food, but they specifically talked about salad bars and buffets,” said Haywood. “The regulations are understandable, but unfortunately, it makes it very difficult to reopen. And I’m not sure the health departments are ever going to allow it. We could’ve overcome any other obstacle, and we’ve worked for eight weeks to overcome these intermittent financial challenges but it doesn’t work if we are not allowed to continue our model.”

“We looked at the (federal) Paycheck Protection Program, but even with that we didn’t see how we could reopen the restaurants. We can’t take that money, it’s just disingenuous,” he added.

Bummer...we always liked going to Souplantation when we went to California. I hadn't thought about how a place was going to reopen under the current guidelines, but I guess it is inevitable with all buffet-type restaurants. I wonder if Golden Corral will be able to answer the bell or how casinos will change their buffets (since that is one of the things that draw in the bus crowd).

I can't see how Golden Corral and similar buffet-style places will ever be able to operate again....

Just the idea of no more salad bars makes me sad...I've always been a big salad bar fan.

It sure looks like the long term effects of this are going to involve a lot of overreaction and overreach...

We have a Jason's Deli right down the road from us. Haven't been since the Kung Flu, but apparently you can still get salad bar and they have servers who'll dish it up for you. I am completely in favor of this and will gladly pay a little extra to not have Karen and her little booger finger kids grubbing around in my food.

We should do that for lunch today. I love salad bar so very very much.

Not sure I see the difference between the people handling the food behind the counter, and a buffet.

I get the numbers, but everyone knows a lot of fast food places, the nastiest person in that restaurant is the person you can't see in the kitchen..

It's really not that hard, they just move to cafeteria style. Instead of serving yourself, the person on the other side of the glass dishes it up for you. You can still have as much as you want and come back as often as you want. Just requires them to employ a couple more people.

This makes me think about a couple things.
What about getting coffee at 7-11 or Wawa? Lots of folks touching those coffee containers and all over the coffee stations.
How will casinos open up and operate, what with people moving from machine to machine? How do you clean between each patron?

Hand washing stations, mandatory hand sanitizer use

I told Nicholas we need to find companies that manufacture car interiors and INVEST..

About 6 - 18 months people are going to start looking to replace their interiors that they've destroyed with hand sanitizer and bleach..

Should be a YUGE uptick in interior refurbishment.

Cafeteria style with servers behind the glass, like when I was a kid with Hot Shopps Cafeteria in Bethesda...
Or we could just go back like it was, with a little more cleaning...

I work with a nutjob, she would wipe down the inside of her car every time she got in it before this, it didn't do anywhere near the damage that armor all did before they fixed the formula (it use to cause dashboards to crack)
