Pet Food Recall & Update on my Puppy

The company said consumers should look for "17" as the first two digits of the second line on the UPC for products affected. For Pedigree products, they should look for "PAE" on the bottom line. They can also call 1-877-568-4463 or visit Mars Petcare September 2008 Recall Information.

The brand names include some items under the names Country Acres, Retriever, Doggy Bag, Members Mark, Natural, Ol' Roy, Special Kitty, Paws & Claws, Pedigree, Wegman's, Pet Pride, PMI Nutrition and Red Flannel.

FOXNews.com - Dry Dog Food Recalled for Possible Salmonella Contamination - Pet Health | Questions | Information | Animal Health

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I deleted my other threads because there were two conversations going on in two different threads about this and it was becomming confusing and also to leave an update about my puppy. She has been hospitalized since Monday and will be staying until this Friday or Saturday with the outstanding staff at Prince Frederick Animal Hospital in Calvert County.
She was thought to have salmonella contamination from bad food because, initially, they couldn’t find any obstruction on x-ray and they knew she didn’t have Parvo. Today, Doctor Ramsey felt something in my pups stomach and was able to get it in the intestinal track but it would not come any further than that. She felt it with her finger so they went in a few hours ago doing exploratory surgery and pulled what is possibly a Popsicle stick out of my dog’s intestine. :ohwell: I will attempt to ID it later this week. It just never showed up on the x-ray at all.
Even still, after all my reading on pet food recalls still feel very strongly that Mars products need to be banned from consumer purchasing as it wasn’t irrational to consider this possibility when your pet becomes mysteriously and suddenly sick on a Friday and a recall is announced on Monday. After extensive reading, they have had far too many recalls for any pet owner to feel comfortable feeding their pets their products and knew about the contamination in July but never bothered to notify consumers. They did find trace amounts of the bacteria in her intestines that indicated food poisoning but thought that something else had to be wrong because she wasn’t improving and Doctor Ramsey at Prince Frederick Hospital kept checking her abdominal area and this morning found this.
I have switched all my animals over to California Natural and Inova foods and they are carried at Clippers in Solomons and Critters in Leonardtown. They have never recalled any of their pet products.
Pet Health Food News from a Natural Pet Food Company – Natura Pet Products
The Pet Food List. Pet Food information, manufacturers, products, ingredients, cat, dog food.
This was a posting found here…
DoggieNews: Purina Recalls Pet Food
I own a small pet boutique, and I carry natural, human grade dog foods. I did my research on dog food before we opened, and were completely disgusted with what we found. We immediately switched our dogs' food. The problem for us consumers is...that no one knows where to find information on the foods and how to decipher the already manipulated ingredient list on the bags...or what they mean. That doesn't include what they lie about or hide. My hope is to help people to learn what they are feeding to their pet. I have a few recommendations for people who'd like more information. I can recommend some foods: Anything from Natura Pet is my favorite. They make 5 brands. I settled on Innova, Innova Evo, California Natural, Karma (organic). They are the only pet food company that can back-up their "human-grade" with an USDA and Organic Certified facility (they make their own food). They have a website The Healthiest Pet Foods in the World – Natural & Organic Pet Food – Natura Pet Products and also a nutritionist on staff. You can compare ingredients and foods on their website. They are about $40 for their largest bag, but you certainly get what you pay for!!! I can't say enough! Also, Solid Gold. They don't manufacture their own food, but they source from only the best places. They also use plant oils for their fat source rather than chicken fat. Their website is Solid Gold Health Food for Pets also with a nutrionist on staff. Wellness made by Old Mother Hubbard is similar to Solid Gold. I also recommend Eagle Pack HOLISTIC Line (they manufacture their own) and Canidae for a good "basic" food. I've not done much research on any other foods, because I feel that this is a good variety to find a formula for each dog and price level. You can find information out there, but you have to look in the right places, and decide what companies are being truthful. A good book that I'd recommend is "Foods Pets Die For" and her latest version "Protect you Pet" by Ann Martin. She had done tons of research, and has vets and other qualified individuals backing her up. It can be bland in parts, but you would not believe what pet food companies can get away with. She also explains how the FDA and organizations work WITH the pet food companies. It's very eye opening. If you can get ahold of the first version...I'd recommend it.
Sure! It's about the only thing I really know. A lot of my knowledge is from pure experience but I read constantly about animal foods, medical care, you name it..anything to do with animals.
I really figured she had an obstruction but the food thing did sound plausible.
You'll have to tell Dr. Ramsey that you and I will have to share the name of that new wing.
I am so very blessed
Glad to hear that your puppy has been diagnosed (well,...... maybe?), and can now start the process of getting better. :yay:
Hey, Pepper's Pet Pantry in Solomon's carries that line of dog food too, I've seen it there at our adoption events...Pepper's is located in the little shopping center by Solomon's Vet and the bike shop...I don't know if thats closer for you or not.
Thanks to the well wishers :howdy: Little Miss is recovering, alert and just so adorable they said tonight on the phone and will be fed later tomorrow morning. Hopefully she will eat. (keeping fingers crossed)
All this has been a real eye opener learning about salmonella, Parvo, pet food recalls, and safer pet foods, and finally, obstructions. I actually found such little information out there on the web because I was searching symptoms and everything mimics everything else when you don't have a clue to the diagnoses. (which is why I thought it might be a good idea to combined everything in this 1 thread for the next pet owner confused about what is going on with their sick pet)
I was told that once a dog gets an obstruction, they are at high risk to get another, mainly because they have proven they will eat what isn't consumable. :dork: Doctor Ramsey said she has pulled just about everything out of a dog, even socks.
Catt,
I agree... a wing and pictures of our money makers (for them of course) all over the walls. :lol: I have spent more on pet bills in the past 12 weeks than I spent on myself all of last year. :jameo: But the good thing, it could have been worse. I could always be worse.
Pandora, I'm so glad you've gotten to the bottom of her problems and that things seem to be improving. You said my thoughts exactly about having learned so much by having this experience. I read some things today about pet foods that literally made me want to vomit! I can't imagine some of the things they put in pet food and call it all good! Anyway, thank you so much for helping to educate the rest of us. I'm going to be changing our dog and cat food next week, once we're sure he's in the clear. I'm looking at Solid Gold and Wellness by Old Mother Hubbard. Both are available in Petco, although I may change my mind before I make my first purchase and go with the Natura brand. Right now I'm still gun shy to make any decisions or purchases. The vet told me today to wait on adding kibble back into his diet until the weekend to be sure he's well. He has been acting much more like his old self today by messing with the cat, playing with my boys, wagging his tail when I walked by him and barking when my husband pulled into the driveway tonight. He hadn't been doing any of those things for the passed 2 weeks and it was so sad! I'm pretty sure it's food poisoning and that he'll be ok.
On another note, on finding odd things in animals during x-ray I have a funny one for you. We moved here 10 years ago and the weekend we moved, our old sheltie (who was 5 at the time) started vomitting blood. I had to find a vet and get him in ASAP to find out what was wrong. Well, long story short, they found a Playtex baby bottle nipple stuck in his intestine! My son was 15 months old at the time and the dog had eaten it and we had no idea. That little venture cost us about $1700, but we had no choice! The vet has never forgotten it and we are forever grateful to her for saving his life.
So glad to hear your pup is better. Let us know how she's doing tomorrow if you have a chance.
Mommy,
I'm real interested in seeing this hunk of "wood" from her intestines when I pick her up. After talking to the vet tonight, she said, she got others to look at it and they think it might be a piece of mulch and not a Popsicle stick but we had Popsicle treats here for the kids last week and the stick was a darker brown color. I hope it is a Popsicle stick and not mulch. I guess I'll find out soon enough but if it is mulch, that scares me. I could understand a Popsicle stick with some left over flavor on it but mulch... blah...
Glad to hear your pup dog is feeling better also and it seems the 2-week mark is par for the course with these postings in other forums I read about and their sick pets. And, it doesn't always have to be salmonella either, there are many micro-organism that get into poorly processed food that can make animals sick, I have learned. The crap they get away with in the pet food market is a rude awakening.
I believe there was a post on here a little while ago about dogs eating mulch.
Apparently there is a brand/type that is made with chocolate and dogs were eating it and getting very sick. I'll try to find that link or if someone knows more about it please post it.
Edit - I found this on snopes.com. Seems like cocoa is an ingredient in a type of mulch. snopes.com: Cocoa Mulch and Dogs
Actually, I just got off the phone with the vet and she will be feeding her around 1:30-2:00 - She has to eat a meal and hold it down for a few hours before coming home but said she is clearly feeling much better.
Thank you for finding that Tes... I think it is a Popsicle stick but maybe that is just wishful thinking, hopefully I will feel more confidence when I see it. I am hoping I can keep it. I paid enough for it. :killingme
