Pet Odors

Does anyone know a good way to get rid of pet odors? I don't mind if my house smells like "oh, he has a dog". What I don't like is it to smell like "AUGH! He HAS a dog!". My house is mostly carpet. So is there something out there I can use or should I invest in a steam cleaner?

Thanks

In my opinion, a steam cleaner is the only option.

Otherwise, you will have fragrance/pet smelly house. Get rid of it.

You can rent steam cleaners at a lot of places.

You can use baking soda. You sprinkle it on your carpeted areas and let it sit for about 30 minutes or so, then vacuum it up.

Then, I would follow-up with Oceans advice.

Your best bet is to buy a steam cleaner. For the amount you will pay to rent one, you might as well go ahead and buy one and get your money's worth. I have a Hoover Steam Vac that I paid about $100 for on Amazon.com. I have had it for three years and it has worked like a charm. I have cleaned three apartments with it and clean my carpets every couple of months. The best cleaning solution I have found to use on both stains and odors is Clorox Color Safe Bleach. (Not the special "carpet cleaning solutions" available at the store.) Though if you have dark colored carpets you might want to do a test area to make sure the color doesn't change. I have used it on white, beige, and tan carpets with no problems. I also treat any "bad" spots with a pet cleaner or Greased Lighting and let them set a few minutes before using the steam cleaner.

The other thing that has helped the smells in my home is getting leather furniture. I was lucky enough to have a friend that was getting rid of his and offered it to me. It is not even the expensive leather, just the cheap stuff you could find at somewhere like Value City or Family Furniture. It is so much easier to clean and doesn't hold smells like cloth furniture does.

Good Luck!

:yay:

Baking soda works wonders. Also give your dogs a bath and CLEAN YOUR DOGS EARS.... I find that the stinky part of the dog. The ONLY time I use the steam cleaner is if there is an accident.

Sometimes I sprinkle essential oils in each of the corners of each of the rooms. I don't like Febreeze or any sprays, it's too much on my nose and gives me a headache.

Good info. I just bought a new house and my fiance is not fond of the dogs smell either. My beagle is the worst, drags his butt, ears, overall stinky boy. I don't know how he does it, he stays inside most of the time. My German Shepherd doesn't smell but the her shedding hair is not fun all over the place.

I clean my beagle's (mix) ears 2x a week with a solution. As far as the butt dragging goes, you should take him to get his anal glands expressed.

He needs to get checked by a vet. Dragging his butt...... a sign of anal gland problems. Stinky ears....... a sign of a ear infection.
My mastiff had to have her ears cleaned twice a week. If not they would stink to high heaven and get infected.
