This is why I always recommended owners to crate train their dogs/puppies. A crate is a safe place to go and should never be used for punishment. If you have a house full of people and especially children the dog is not used to, put the crate in another room and let the dog chill. A crate would also prevent someone from accidentally letting the dog outside.
Our Sasha was 5 YO when I pulled her from TCAS. She rode in a crate in the car and we kept a couple of crates for her to use in the house. She never uses them any more but then again, we never have children in the house or a house full of strangers. Our friends that do come over love her and she enjoys the attention (and an occasional food morsel dropped on the floor)
