GF and I were talking and she has never heard the Easter Bunny referred to as Peter Cottontail. I was floored.

Am I the only one who's heard this?

My dad used to sing...
"Here comes Peter Cottontail...
Hoppin' down the bunny trail...
Hippity Hoppity Easter's on its way..."

Peter Cottontail was a rabbit in a story that involved him getting into a guy's garden and eating carrots, cabbages, etc. It was a series of children's books that I presume was popular in the 1950's. I remember having the story read to me many times, and eventually reading it myself.

People who remembered the story tended to apply the name Peter Cottontail to all things bunny, so some folks have referred to the Easter Bunny as Peter Cottontail.

However, when I was a little tyke, our family decided the Easter Bunny was actually Harvey, a 6-foot tall Pooka that liked hanging out in bars with James Stewart.

Easter Bunny as Peter Cottontail goes back to at least 1950.
Gene Autry sang "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" in 1950, which I found and downloaded, and I found this DVD of a 1970 movie on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005UM20/103-8450265-8384663?v=glance

Where has she been

When my older brother was about 5 or 6 he played Peter Cotton tail in the school play and after about 2 hops, he slipped and fell on his backside/cotton tail part of the costume and then tried to get up and something ripped and he fell back down again... it looked as though Peter Cotton tail was being gunned down by Hunters...:frown: Then he finally gets up and hops across stage only to discover his tail was laying on the floor so he ran backed picked it up and then hopped around carrying it in his basket the rest of the skit--all the while the music relentlessly kept playing the song Here comes Peter Cotton Tail from the record player... :roflmao: I remember this because I got upset that everyone was rolling in the isles laughing at my brother. He has since learned to laugh at this...

You're really RodRugg aren't you... :roflmao:

Anyway, to answer your question, I suspect its because her parents are both from the Philippines, and they've never heard of Peter Cottontail either, which means she didn't celebrate the same way I did...

Peter Rabbit is the bunny of Beatrix Potter fame. And Flopsy and Mopsy and Farmer McGregors garden.. Different Peter..lol

Thank you Morgan! Beatrix Potter was born in 1866, so her stories are much older than Peter Cottontail stories.

A girl in the first grade class I was helping with decided the Easter Bunny's name is James.
Tell her that James has a giant peach and that he cannot be the Easter Bunny. :killingme

Wow

I have heard of Peter Cottontail, and I know the song...

but I have never associated Peter Rabbit as being the easter bunny. Maybe its because I grew up going to Catholic school so they would associate Easter as being a religious holiday, not about a bunny????
