Mark 14:66 While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him.
“You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said.
68 But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway.
69 When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.” 70 Again he denied it.
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
71 He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”
72 Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
One insistent servant girl nagged at Peter twice. Then a someone standing in the crowd recognized Peter as a Galilean, like Jesus. The news has been showing some of the revolts and riots going on in China and Russia these days. In Russia they don't like the draft [go figure] and in China they are sick to death of COVID restrictions [who isn't]. They are not in the good ol' USA where protests are civilized, they are in a police state where they could be shot for causing a raucous. It was like that back in the days of Jesus. Rome was large and in charge. If you caused a riot in Jerusalem back in the day, you could be hung on the Cross. That's what the Cross was for. They didn't mess around with "freedom". Only the Romans were free.... and some of them were in a real prison because they were in debt.
Peter, and the others, were afraid. Jesus never promised them protection. They could be arrested and prosecuted for being one of His "gang" or disciples.
Now if someone needed a healing.... they had no one to turn to. Those who had been gifted with healing [by Jesus] were in hiding. If they healed someone, they would be accused in the courts.
He was afraid.
