The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit (CARU) is investigating a fatal collision in College Park on Sunday evening. The decedent is 17-year-old Oscar Hernandez of Chillum.
The preliminary investigation revealed, on September 1st, at approximately 7:35 pm, a PGPD patrol officer in a marked cruiser observed a motorcycle traveling southbound at a high rate of speed along Baltimore Avenue in College Park. As the officer approached the motorcyclist, the motorcyclist made an illegal U-turn into oncoming traffic, drove onto the sidewalk, and then began heading northbound on Baltimore Avenue. The officer then made a U-turn, pulled up to the motorcyclist who was stopped in a turning lane. When the officer activated his lights and attempted a traffic stop, the motorcycle fled at a high rate of speed, driving into an intersection against a red light. At this point, the officer called out to dispatchers with a motorcycle refusing to stop and was advised by his supervisor to disengage. The officer complied and immediately turned off his emergency equipment. The officer continued northbound along the motorcycle’s route of travel. Approximately a half-mile away at the next intersection at Fox Street, the motorcycle operator drove into oncoming southbound traffic, through the intersection, against the red light, and collided with a Hyundai attempting to turn southbound onto Baltimore Avenue. The officer drove up to the collision scene, blocked traffic, and began life-saving measures on Hernandez who had been operating the motorcycle. Hernandez died of his injuries while being transported to the hospital. The driver of the Hyundai was not injured.
