The Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit is actively investigating a fatal crash in Capitol Heights. A motorcycle rider, 47-year-old Hjalmar Melendez of Germantown, was killed in the collision. A driver who struck Melendez in the roadway fled the scene.
On September 1st, at approximately 3:40 am, patrol officers responded to the 1700 block of Kenilworth Avenue for a collision.
The preliminary investigation reveals Melendez was heading southbound on Kenilworth Avenue. He attempted to merge onto the off-ramp toward Eastern Avenue, when for reasons that are under investigation, he left the roadway and struck the median curb. Melendez was thrown from his motorcycle. A driver then struck Melendez as he lay in the roadway. Melendez was pronounced dead on the scene.
Investigators are working to identify the driver who fled. The striking car is described as a silver sedan, possibly a Nissan Altima, with front-end and passenger side damage.
