Homicide Unit detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in Suitland on Monday. The victim is 24-year-old Mshairi Alkebular Jr., of Southeast Washington. Preliminarily, detectives do not believe this was a random crime.
On August 5th, at approximately 1:15 pm, patrol officers responded for the report of a large fight in the 5600 block of Suitland Road. The officers encountered a large group of people who had just attended a funeral service at a church in a strip mall at that location. The funeral had been held for a victim of a homicide in the District of Columbia. As officers were attempting to diffuse the fight, they heard gunshots nearby. Officers responded one block away to the 5800 block of Suitland Road and discovered Alkebular next to a car suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers provided emergency lifesaving measures on scene and Alkebular was transported to a local hospital where he died late Monday night. It was determined that three additional people were injured as result of the incident. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Detectives are actively working to determine the sequence of events following the funeral.
