Announces Milestone of 11,000 Registered Apprentices Statewide, Highest Participation in Maryland History
Historic Site in East Baltimore Revitalized by Project C.O.R.E
ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today attended the grand opening ceremony of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Greater Baltimore’s new Construction Education Academy located at a Project C.O.R.E site in East Baltimore. This new state-of-the-art training facility will house the largest concentration of building trade apprenticeship programs in the State of Maryland, enabling ABC Greater Baltimore to train up to 5,000 skilled workers each year, doubling their current capacity.
“Since its founding in Baltimore in 1950, ABC has been setting the standard for safety, quality, and integrity in the construction industry,” said Governor Hogan. “Just as importantly, as we see here today, ABC continues to invest in the future of our skilled workforce. As our state and nation continue our economic recovery, we will continue to rely on ABC to help us grow a steady pipeline of talented, well-trained workers to meet the increasing demand for these skilled jobs.”
During the event, the governor announced the record-breaking milestone of 11,000 registered apprentices currently working, earning, and learning in the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Program, which represents the highest participation rate in state history. Registered apprenticeships give employees the opportunity to have a full-time job while receiving on-the-job training and classroom instruction. ABC Greater Baltimore, which has been a registered apprenticeship sponsor for over 52 years, offers apprenticeship programs in over 20 occupations, and currently has approximately 500 registered apprentices.
As other states have lost apprentices during the COVID-19 pandemic, Maryland quickly adapted to the virtual environment and modernized elements of the program, resulting in significant growth. In addition to surpassing a record 11,000 registered apprentices in Maryland, the state has added 20 new occupations and 17 new sponsors since the beginning of March. ABC Greater Baltimore is one of 3,690 businesses providing Marylanders with long-lasting careers while strengthening the state’s workforce through Maryland’s Registered Apprenticeship Program.
The new Construction Education Academy is located at the historical A. Hoen & Co. Lithograph Building. After sitting abandoned for 40 years, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development administered more than $4 million for the Hoen building redevelopment, including more than $2 million through Project C.O.R.E., Governor Hogan’s signature initiative to revitalize Baltimore City.
