Agreement Promotes Expanded Collaboration in Marine Aquaculture and
Biotechnology
ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today joined Oded Forer, Israeli Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and Minister for the Development of the Periphery, the Negev, and the Galilee, to enact a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the State of Maryland and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of the State of Israel. The agreement promotes further cooperation in the areas of marine aquaculture and biotechnology.
“Maryland’s collaboration with Israel has already produced notable achievements in medicine, healthcare, and biotechnology, important advancements to defense and our national security, and new partnerships with great Israeli companies,” said Governor Hogan. “With this new agreement, I am looking forward to expanding our collaboration and cooperation in the fields of marine aquaculture and biotechnology to help ensure that both Maryland and Israel become global leaders in these important industries.”
The agreement signed today builds upon the aquaculture research partnership enacted in December between the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Chancellor Jay Perman of the University System of Maryland took part in today’s meeting.
Under the newest MOU, Maryland will work with Israel to further expand international cooperation in areas including: domestication of different species of fish, shellfish, and algae; genetic selection of farmed species, such as salmon, sea bream, seabass, groupers, and shrimp to improve economic performance; environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible aquaculture production platforms; development and application of biotechnology tools to enhance the environmental and economic feasibility of mariculture; and smart agriculture and the mitigation of climate change.
In 2016, Governor Hogan led a trade mission to Israel where he ratified an MOU between Tel Aviv University and UMBC to promote academic cooperation and collaboration between the two universities, as well as an MOU between the University of Maryland, Baltimore and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to encourage joint research, teaching, and studies. During the mission, the governor also signed a Sister State agreement between Maryland and the Negev region in Israel—representing Maryland’s 19th Sister State relationship and the first in the Middle East.
