CSM Pianist Sahun Hong Brings Colorful and Riveting Energy to Prince Frederick as Part of Ward Virts Concert Series

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) continues its 2018-2019 Ward Virts Concert Series Feb. 10 at its Prince Frederick Campus with a performance by renowned pianist Sahun Hong, who brings his colorful style and riveting energy to the solo, chamber and concerto stage.

Praised as an “artist already of enormous prowess” (Verbier Festival Newsletter) with “lots of clarity, confidence, and wisdom” (New York Concert Review), pianist Hong has been on the roster of Young Steinway Artists since 2010.

He has been featured as a guest soloist with the ORF-Vienna, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Camerata New York, Fort Worth, Richardson, Racine, Waco, Galveston, and Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestras. He has given performances in prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall, Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, the Vienna Musikverein, Église de Verbier, Merkin Hall, and the Kennedy Center.

Hong was most recently the winner of the 2017 Vendome Prize at Verbier, and also received Second Prize at the 2017 International Beethoven Competition Vienna. He was a finalist in the 2017 American Pianists Awards.

An avid chamber musician, Hong is the pianist of the award-winning Trio St. Bernard, with violinist Brandon Garbot and cellist Zachary Mowitz. He has been appeared in chamber music festivals such as Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute, Chamber Music Encounters at Lincoln Center, and the Taos School of Music. His recent collaborations include performances with Itzhak Perlman, Colin Carr, Ani Kavafian, Ida Kavafian, Daniel Phillips, and Steven Tenenbom.

The Ward Virts Concert Series celebrates the life and work of Ward Virts, a talented Southern Maryland pianist who died suddenly in 1993. A group of Ward’s friends and classmates conceived the Ward Virts Piano Project to bring the love of life, beauty and music that Ward embodied to a new generation of Southern Maryland students, performers and appreciative audiences. The concerts are performed on a world-class handcrafted Bosendorfer Grand Piano, a gift to CSM’s Prince Frederick Campus from the Ward Virts Piano Project.

The Ward Virts Concert Series is presented by sponsors Dr. and Mrs. Henry Virts, Eric and Rané Franklin, Mary Anna Phillips, Stovy and Anne Brown and the CSM Foundation. Grants provided by the Arts Council of Calvert County and Maryland State Arts Council also make the performances possible.

The series takes place in the Multipurpose Room 104 in Building B on the Prince Frederick Campus. All performances begin at 3 p.m. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. No tickets or reservations are needed. Concerts are free.
