Mark 14:12 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13 So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. 14 Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16 The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
17 When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20 “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.
24 “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. 25 “Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Apparently, some of the books have the word "new" before the word "covenant" in verse 24. Just last Thursday we celebrated Thanksgiving. People all over the US were sitting down to dinner with their families. I'm sure my husband "remembered" his sister who passed since last Thanksgiving. I thought about my mom and dad. I also thought about friends and family that could not, or would not, be with us.
While we sat around the tables all over the US, there were lots of tales. People had a lot of stories to share. Some families invited friends to eat with them and when they were introduced to the rest of the family, they had a story of introduction.
Back in the late 70's and 80's we were in Virginia Beach. We invited members of the military to have a home cooked meal with the family. When those sailors or soldiers sat down with us, no doubt they "remembered" their families too.
How did that guy in verse 13 know they were going to come to him? What made going to get that jug of water he was carrying so different than any other jug being carried by any other man? Jesus arranged it. I could get all mired down in that question, just as so many have gotten mired down by trying to understand the bread and wine.
Yesterday I enjoyed left over pie! Pi! Solving for Pi! I am thankful that I don't have to get the answer for every question ever asked. Trying to figure out how the guy with the jug knew two disciples would show up to use the room for the Passover Feast is as useless as solving for Pi! Trying to figure out what Jesus meant when He used bread and wine as body and blood is as useless as solving for Pi! I'm a Southern Baptist. We Believe God explains what we need to know so we can explain it. If God doesn't want us to have the exact answer.... well, we'll never find the answer.... because it's Satan that has us trying to solve for Pi!
Some families had big fights on Thursday. Some family members aired all their dirty laundry and fought it out. I bet more than a small percentage of the people who arrived for a ham or turkey dinner, stormed out before the meal was on the table. They accused someone of something.
Jesus' Passover was really a family affair. Jesus told them someone at the table was going to sell Him out. Everyone, including Judas, said "was it me". And Judas got a big head about his deal and stormed out. He was still angry about the nard. I have a couple of aunts who haven't spoken in 40 years now because of something someone said at a family dinner. You know how that goes... right?
So.... did you have pie for Thanksgiving? Or... did you spend you Thanksgiving solving for Pi?
Pie v Pi
