Pig Ear Prices

I bought a bag of them at Petco two weeks ago and almost died of the price. They were 39.99 for a bag of 25. He gets a pig ear once a day so they will last a while, but still.

So anyone have a good website that sells dog treats/pig ears/or rawhids for less. The puppy gets plain rawhides to encourage him to chew on something besides my shoes/socks/tv remotes.

I get almost everything from DogToys.com, but my monsters don't get pig ears. I just looked at their website and they are $1.79 ea, which would make it $44.75 for 25.

IMHO, since he's a puppy you want to keep busy - get him a kong and place peanutbutter and kibbles in it, freeze overnight and give to him before you leave. It will keep him much busier and healthier.

They also sell smart toys that you place kibbles in - and then you give to them, to play with to figure out how to get the kibbles out. That one's a huge hit as well.

I dn't give them the chewy type of toys when I am not home.

I have two 4-legged monsters. 4 year old gets his pig ear at night when I am home from work.

Puppy Hmm..he does love his kong. I didn't think to freeze it with pb and kibbles.

I'm not a dog mommy Nazi, I think an occassional Pig Ear or rawhide - while supervised, would be okay, but not every day.

Question: Is it alright to give our dog pig's ears as a treat? We have been told that it is unhealthy and could cause intestinal upsets or even death. What is the truth?

Pig's ear treats have a high fat content and can be fattening, eventually leading to obesity. They can also cause stomach upsets in some dogs. Because they have are high in fat, they can irritate the pancreas, causing pancreatitis in susceptible dogs. This results in vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Pig's ear treats can also be a source of Salmonella bacteria. The federal government recently issued a warning that pig's ear dog treats from a number of manufacturers were contaminated with Salmonella bacteria, which can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and other serious long-term complications. Some pets who become infected may not show clinicals signs.

These products can also be a risk to humans, according to the Health Canada warning. Transmission of the bacteria to humans can be via direct handling of contaminated product or handling of infected pets who may have become infected. For this reason, owners are advised to wash their hands thoroughly with warm water and soap after handling pig's ear treats. Better yet, consult your veterinarian about these products or avoid them altogether.

I buy my smoked pig ears (the real thing) from a gentleman at the farmers market for 6 for $10.00. They are huge and will last for several days..

Have you tried the nylabones? The puppy can't chew through them so you would not have to worry while you are away.
