Pinecone Bird Feeders

Granddaughter and I made pinecone feeders last weekend, and this morning there are birds on them! First saw a large red-headed woodpecker, but he was a coward and flew away as soon as I moved.

But I was able to get a picture of this little guy...

Cool! I used to make those with my mom when I was a kid. Wish we had some of those huge pinecones from Florida, we just used the biggest ones that Johnnycake mountain in Connecticut had to offer.

Today was the first time I saw them on the pinecones, I think it was just because the feeder was empty!

They're all back on the now full feeders. Pinecones must be a last resort.

What do you do, just put peanut butter on them and then roll in bird seed? I have been planning on doing that, but just haven't gotten around to it.

Be sure to tie a piece of yarn or string to the cone first! Nice open pinecones, gently pushing peanut butter into the cone, then roll in seed. The mixed seed goes on and stays on better that straight sunflower.

Wife made some a few weeks ago. Buy the cheapest peanut butter you can get, melt it in a large sauce pan, stir in seeds, put on latex gloves and just mash the mixture in the pine cone. You can add a hanger before or after. To do it after just loop it around the pinecone, pull tight and tie a knot, it will embed in the cone. The birds (and squirrels) love them. If you can find suet, you can do the same thing.

Another fun project: Take a log, or a 2x6 board, drill a series of 1 1/2 holes as deep as you can with out going all the way through.
Mix peanut butter/bird seed mix as limplibs described, and fill holes, hang or nail to tree.
But attaching to a tree..the larger birds..woodpeckers..can acess the yummy teats!!

I'm gonna try this next time, sounds easier than what we did.
