Plagiocephaly

Hey everyone. I just found out that I am going to have to treat my son for plagiocephaly. I was wondering if any one else has had to deal with this and what their experiences were.

Not sure who you've been to see and who prescribed treatment, but if you went up to that helmet place in Anandale, they are notorious for "selling" services that may or may not be needed. Our child had Plagiocephaly and we were quite concerned, confused, etc. We took her to a cranial-facial specialist at Inova. They have head shape assessment sessions every thursday, first come first served, and you'll get a real answer from him, at which point you can make an informed decision. If you've already gone through all of that, I can't help you with info on treatment as we ended up not needing it. Just want to make sure you are informed before jumping right into a $4000, likely uninsured treatment.

our son had plagiocephaly due to congenital torticollis. we went to star cranial in columbia and were very pleased with the staff and with the results. It can be challenging to manage appts. and deal with the helmet, but it's totally worth it.

Birdman, yes, I have gone to Cranial Tech in Annadale. I found them on my own since my pediatrician wanted me to wait another 2 months before she gave a recommendation. My son has obviously had a flattening since before his 2 month check up and I didn't feel comfortable with the wait. I have only had the initial consultation with them so I haven't felt any pressure. I have also heard that insurance might not cover the DOC band but it might cover the Star band. Where is Inova? I have never heard of it before.

Terbear, thankfully my little guy doesn't have torticollis. Don't get me wrong, he does have a tight neck muscle but Cranial Tech suggested just doing stretches would correct it. Depending on a variety of factors, I may go to Star Cranial. I have heard mixed reviews about both places.

Thank you both for your insight.

Terbear's husband here. :howdy: Our boy's torticollis was mild enough that we were able to treat it with physical therapy. The therapist taught us how to stretch him, basically. No surgery, etc.

We loved the folks at Star Cranial, they really seemed to know what they were doing, and the helmet did it's job. Do you know what is causing the plagiocephaly, if it isn't torticollis? What part of the head is the flattening on?

Inova is a northern VA hospital system, right off the beltway:

Pediatric Craniofacial Program - Inova Health System

I'd suggest you consider going to the craniofacial center for a consultation and an "unbiased" assessment.

i would agree with that suggestion if you haven't already done so. for anyone else that might be reading this, do NOT wait for your pediatrician if you have ANY concerns about a flattening of the skull. get your kid to a specialist and see what they have to say. We should have pushed a lot sooner to get our son seen by a specialist (we went to a.i. dupont a children's hospital in de.) the sooner you get treatment, the more effective it is.
