Platform Bed

I'm thinking of getting a new bed and am looking at platform beds. I like the simplistic style but wondering, since typically you only use a mattress with it, can you still use the boxspring as well?

We don't use a boxspring with ours. Haven't had any issues with the bed and we've had it for over 6 years.

See that's the thing, I want to use the boxspring, but will that cause the mattress to slide off the boxspring because typically it's the mattress encased within the sides of the platform.

Depending on what you are doing in the bed, the mattrss may slide

But I really don't know for sure since we never even bothered using the boxspring with the bed.

Mine has a "box" with the matress on top and it isn't a problem. They don't make "box springs" anymore that I know of.

That looks like it would be hard to make - I envision broken fingernails and splinters.

That's what I was afraid of. With only a mattress on the bed, I think I'd feel like I was sleeping on the floor, it just looks so low.

I guess it all depends on the bed. Ours isn't super low to the ground. It sits about the same height as the kid's twin beds that use a box spring.

And BSgal....It really isn't a pain to make at all. No broken nails or splinters.

I really can't tell because of the smallness of the photo, but it appears that there are wood slats in place to "hold" the top mattress. Right? Or is it nylon webbing holding the mattress in place?

If it's wood...here's my experience. Bubba has a Captains bed in his room that also has a trundle to it. Both the upper mattress and the lower trundle mattress sit on wood slats. There is absolutely no "give" to the mattresses, so sleeping on it is really uncomfortable - even though the mattresses are of pretty decent quality. I used to have one of the mattresses on a daybed with a wire/spring thingy holding the mattress, and sleeping on that bed was very comfortable. I'm only guessing that the problem now is the wood slats being so rigid that it feels like you're sleeping on a parking lot.

So, bottom line.....make sure that your mattress rests on either a box mattress, or that the top mattress sits atop a material that has some flexibility to it.

It depends on the bed you buy. Some have wood slats, some have the material. The picture was just an example of what kind of bed I was talking about. I've been looking around and found a couple nice ones at IKEA, but I really don't want something I have to put together.

Thanks for the info!

Ikea is where we purchased ours from and it does have the wood slates.

I ordered Bubba's bed on-line. It was unassembled in a large box (well, actually three large boxes), but it was easy peasy to put together. It took a screwdriver and maybe an hours' worth of time to get everything in place. Best yet, it came directly to the house so I didn't have to schlep it home from the store. :yay:

Not that I did it, mind you. Bob put it together. :thewave:
