my car is making a whining noise..my neighbor works at toyota ( i have an 04 corolla) and took a peek and said that one of my belts was dry rotted..and he would replace it for me...said I should buy it..he would put it on..no biggie. Now I cannot remember which belt he said...and I dont really know much about the engine...and my mom called to get an estimate..(though i told her I would do it..and that I would have to find out which it was) and told me that it is 500 bucks to get a timing belt replaced..i dont even know if that is the one..i certainly cannot afford it..and if he just checked it in a minute or so..could it really be the timing belt? arent there other, easier to change belts? im confused..and if I take it somewhere they just jerk me around cuz im a chick.

Why not just ask the neighbor which belt he said it was?

I havent seen him in awhile..im at work..and my mother is having a fit about me getting this timing belt replaced..shes just sure its gonna snap and my engine will fall to pieces..and because i want to figure out if thats even the issue..im irresponsible.c i was hoping someone on here could tell me.

It is likely NOT your timing belt. It is under a shroud and not visable without taking it apart. It is likely a serpentine belt which would be much, much less.

Thats what Im thinking! besides if the timing belt has to be changed by taking apart the engine..u would think it would not be so easy to dry rot.

If he took a peek in and saw it, without taking anything apart, you should be able to do the same. A rotting belt is unmistakable - you'll see it frayed on the edges and in a poor state in general. Then you go to the happy people at Haydens, ask one of them to come tell you what that frayed belt is, and they will hook you up with a new one for your neighbor to install.

If he said it would be "no biggie" you can probably bet that it was not the timing belt. It more than likely is the ancillary drive belt used to operate the power steering, alternator, A/C.

The engine should be a 1.8L SFI DOHC 4 Cyl and whether it has A/C or not is the only factor in determining what belt you need.

1) Like Pete said, you cannot see the timing belt just by looking under the hood.

2) Like Vrai said, head to Hayden's, autozone, advanced and have them take a peek and help you out.

3) Timing belt change intervals for your car is @ 110,000 miles.

Toyota went to a timing chain in the Corolla with the 1998 model year. That means it cannot possibly be the timing belt (ya don't got one). Must be the serpentine belt.

I wouldn't take this as gospel, but this says the 2004 corolla utilizes atiming chain, not a timing belt, and chains do not dry rot...
"The 2003-2008 Corolla comes with the 1.8-liter 16-valve DOHC engine with the VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing). This engine uses a long-lasting timing chain; there is no timing belt to replace."
