Would have rather seen someone else carry the flag. From the little bit I've read about Phelps, he didn't even attend the opening ceremonies of his previous Olympics, plus, once his flag carrying duties were done for these opening ceremonies, he left immediately. This could be bogus information but I still would have rather seen some unknown first-time Olympic athlete do it.

My understanding was that he did not attend previously due to his racing schedule, not necessarily by choice. I could be wrong though.

Yes, a quick search showed that in previous Olympics, he was scheduled to swim the very next day, which, given the hours required standing when participating in the opening cermonies, could impact performance the next morning. In this Olympics, he's performing in fewer events, the first of which is three days after the ceremony.

Such as the case may be, the idea stepping aside just to appease the flavor of the month is slightly repugnant. BLM is holding a protest, lets abdicate in favor of a black man; the Japanese are pissy because they got nuked, lets put in a Japanese; the Indians are upset because somebody built a house on the wrong plot of land...Its like were supposed to bow down to the last butt hurt group in an immensely long line of affronted groups. But I suppose I shouldn't have an opinion due to being a straight white male with all of the associated percs.

I can't believe the amount of coverage this woman is receiving. The very first interview I saw with her she said she fences because her mother thought it would be the best sport, given it requires you to be covered head to toe.

So brave, doing exactly what your religion/parents tell you to do in such a way that no one in the world would have noticed if you didn't send out your own press releases.

Now if she was competing in one of the swimming events in a Burka I would be quite a bit more impressed.

Is it just me or does anyone else dislike locals yelling "O" during the Anthem. Drives me crazy at Hockey games.

Very disrespectful. I also don't like when you go to any Chopticon sporting event where the Anthem is played and at the end, the kids scream "AND THE HOME OF THE 'BRAVES'" :smack:

1. 'Brave' is not plural in the song, dipsh!ts.

2. Show some respect and keep your mouths closed, cellphones down, hand on your hearts and for Christ's sake stand up!

Took Bubba to a movie on the base 2 weeks ago. They play the Star Spangled banner before every movie. Bubba was schooled at an early early age how important it was to show respect for our country. Half-way through the song, he looked at me like he was going to ask me something and I glared at him with a look that would burn a hole into your soul. He looked straight forward and stood up straight without saying a word. :patriot:

When the song was done, he asked me to take him to the bathroom. He is learning so much every day. I am proud. :huggy:

Wanted to throw my goddamn soda at the tween girls in front of me. But I kept my cool. Guy two seats down told them to show some respect or he would escort them out. You could tell he was military by his stance during the Anthem. I was glad someone else said it... because I have a hard time staying level-headed.

I have lived in other countries... Japan for 4 years... Guam for 2... Let me be the one to tell you, there is no soil like American soil. You might bash our country, but remember, there are people DYING to defend your right and liberty to do so. So show some goddamn respect and teach your children the same. Or I will find you. :coffee: and I will kill you. :coffee:

...ok maybe not that far, but I will give you a stern talking-to. :cds:

I am surprised how many states no longer have kids saying the Pledge of Allegiance in schools. Parents are shocked when I tell them my kids have always done that in school.
