It was nearly 11:00 pm on a cold night – the temperature around 40 degrees – when two Special Operations Division K9 officers, Corporals Mason and Carter, responded to the report of a critical missing child. The child was just eight years old and on the autism spectrum. The little boy had wandered from his home in Upper Marlboro. His frightened family called for our help. Corporals Mason and Carter began searching the immediate area around his home and also requested help from our Aviation Section. When our helicopter, called Guardian, and its flight crews arrived, they began canvassing the area with pilot, Mr. Corser, and Tactical Flight Officer, Cpl. Elrod on board. After scouring the area for several minutes using the FLIR thermal imaging system, the Guardian’s crew spotted someone on the banks of a large body of water who appeared to have their legs submerged. The Tactical Flight Officer alerted the K9 officers on the ground and began guiding them where to go. Knowing time was of the essence, the officers ran toward the waterline. Thankfully, the officers were able to reach the child, who was cold and wet but otherwise unharmed. The officers brought him back home where an ambulance crew and his relieved family were waiting.
