Pls Help: Plumbing/Insurance Claim Question

Hello,

This morning I woke up to find the ceiling of the bottom floor of my town home leaking. I've checked on the floor directly above the leak and it is not clear what is causing the problem. This is the first time I've run into a problem like this; what should I do?

Should I make a claim against my homeowners insurance? Which I assume would entail an adjuster coming to the house to evaulate damages... (Note: I have Liberty Mutual)

Should I call a plumber directly and handle the problem without insurance?

Meanwhile, I have no water because I had to turn the main off. I need to come up with a solution today.

Thanks for any help/suggestions!!!

IF your insurance covers it, chances are they'll pay it and the next time you have a need to use your homeowners, they'll pay it and dump you.

Give them a call and see what they tell you. But when I wanted to make a claim (with Prudential..now Liberty) a few years back for something similar, our insurance person (who I've dealt with for years) said "with your deductible, I would just pay for the damages out of pocket and not make a claim...wait for a hurricane or something like that."

Thanks, I fixed it...but dumb is sort of appropriate..maybe screw would be a better word.

I couldn't figure out if you thought they were dumb for reporting it to their insurance company or dumb for not reporting it to their insurance company.

I would find out if the repair will exceed your insurance deductable before getting the insurance company involved.

Unfortunately if there are no fixtures above where the leak is coming from, it is going to be hard to diagnose the problem. Usually a plumber will charge around $100 just to diagnose the problem......I would come look, but I have no idea where you live........
