Police Car at Carwash

I loved cops until I moved out here and saw the good-old-boy mentality in action. I came from Fairfax County, Va. where they have a real police force.

Sometimes they give it to us but MOST of the time WE pay ourselves, and as far as washing it when off, well if were in the vehicle and a call is near guess what we will be there to save your complaining butt, so 3 minutes at a car wash every month isnt going to effect the countless hours we give for free so shut the .... up and get a life.:smack: yes I am a cop. ::
Is that how you view trouble calls? Pathetic, you should be a garbage man.

Officers (state and county) do clean their cars off duty most of the time

Officers, once in a while, clean their cars on duty. This can be difficult due to the HIGH volume of calls. There is noting wrong with that.

Officer pay out of pocket to get their car washed.

Good info.

Officers cars get inspected for cleanliness.

So, how many of those here crying about this are stealing tax money by posting from work? Or is that off topic?

NOT Politically Correct!!

I'm sure Fairfax country still has lots of overpriced homes available for you to move back to. I lived in Japan for 12 years and their transportation is superior to our entire nations, you don't see me biatching that SOMD needs to get a real transportation system!!!

Protect and serve the public first. Once you do that, then we can worry about transportation systems. Baby steps.

I know cops sometimes take their vehicles home, but do they use it for every day and treat it like a personal car? Day off, and they fire up the patrol car to run to Lowes or something? Because I've never seen this.
Boy told me the other day that his mom's bf (who is a cop) took him to school in the patrol car. I just figured he was going right to work after that.

No different than chatting at the water cooler.

I just wonder why they don't get the inmates at the jail to do this once a week or when really needed. Maybe to all county and school board vehicles.

Calvert County rules are that the Deputies can use their cruisers inside the County for personal business. Theory is that it ups visibility. They also have to stop at accidents while using them for personal business and I think respond to other types of incidents.

Adding Diversity to SOMD
I don't know if I am going to get myself into trouble for asking this, but today at about 5:30pm I was at the Chesaldine car wash (the robot one) and there was a police car in front of me with two officers inside it in uniform getting a wash. They got the $10 wash (with the RainX). With the current economic problems and tighter budgets etc. should they be getting $10 washes at tax payer expense??? I just always assumed they washed their own vehicles at the station/garage. Am I wrong?
Well when I grew up in S.Carolina, the local law enforcement made the criminals was their cars... It was part of their community service program... My buddy had a few hours of community service, and he said they had to wash the cop cars. I thought that was a good idea then, and I just assumed that is how it was all over the county........

The county DOES do this. You can go to the vehicle maint lot of Rt 4. In the past there has been an inmate that washes county gov vehicles (to include police cars).

Because you assume that since he was once seen at a car wash that is what he does on a normal basis, I wash my car (and my wife's) on my own time as well but when we have days of bad weather, my wife front loads me with tons of do it myself projects, or I have a high work load at work and get home exhausted, you may see my lazy ass that week at a car wash. What part of life are you not understanding??? Last, what is your proof he didn't pay for it out of his own pocket, if you cannot, shut your blowhole!!!

I never said he didn't pay for it out of pocket. I stated my opinion. Shut my blowhole? I'm really surprised at you.

Because it's a perk, like most employees enjoy in one form or another. When I worked at Ch 10, I got free cable.

Now, I'm curious though: I know cops sometimes take their vehicles home, but do they use it for every day and treat it like a personal car? Day off, and they fire up the patrol car to run to Lowes or something? Because I've never seen this.

My former cop fiancee used to take his car home, but he never used it personal stuff, that I recall.
I've seen cops driving with their whole family in the car. I'm of the opinion that if you use a vehicle that is paid for by tax dollars, maintained by tax dollars, fueled with tax dollars, the least you can do is throw some water at it, at your own expense.

What I've learned in my long 9 years here is never, ever question the Fire Dept, EMS or Cops on this site. If you do , you will get your head ripped off by the locals.

The locals believe that these organizations can do no wrong and are not subject to any question from us common folk.

So ignore what these organizations do because they do not care what we think and will do what they please.

Define 'locals'.

My CC cop buddy washes his cruiser at least a week, and waxes it once a month... Every weekend it is super clean down to the tires... he uses his own supplies.
This is one of the benefits of 'personal ownership' of police cars. It used to be EVERYONE had a motorpool and you were assigned a car when you came on shift.

Cars weren't taken care of, nobody cared about the cleanliness or the maintenance, and cars had to be replaced frequently.

Don't know which department started it, but they deserve an award for thinking of it. Buying (or leasing) MORE cars so an officer could be assigned his or her own car. They take it home, they take care of it. The cars last much longer, and I've never seen a dirty police car in any department that does it.

Cars are well maintained, last years longer than they used to, and when done are worth much more when sold/ traded in/ or returned on lease.

I used to live in a neighborhood in Solomons and had three or four cops next door/ on the street. These people take a LOT of pride in their patrol cars. I'd see them what seemed like DAILY out there cleaning their patrol cars, vacuuming and cleaning the interior, scrubbing the tires and wheels, waxing/ polishing, and constantly cleaning the windows, while their personally owned cars went weeks and months without getting washed. I like the idea of them taking their cars home, and it seems to be working just the way it was intended, and saving the taxpayers a massive amount of money.

$10 for a car wash? I bet it came out of their own pocket.
