Pope criticizes atheism, modern Christianity, in encyclical on hope

"VATICAN CITY: Pope Benedict XVI strongly criticized modern-day atheism in a major document released Friday, saying it had led to some of the "greatest forms of cruelty and violations of justice" ever known to mankind.

But Benedict also critically questioned modern Christianity in his second encyclical, saying its focus on individual salvation had ignored Jesus' message that true Christian hope involves salvation for all.

"Saved by Hope" is a deeply theological exploration of Christian hope: that in the suffering and misery of daily life, Christianity provides the faithful with a "journey of hope" to the Kingdom of God.

"We must do all we can to overcome suffering, but to banish it from the world is not in our power," Benedict wrote. "Only God is able to do this."

The Pope asks:
"How could the idea have developed that Jesus' message is narrowly individualistic and aimed only at each person singly?" he asked.

Here is the Answer:
Because that is what Jesus taught!

Salvation is not a “blanket guarantee” for the masses; (no pun intended) it is an individual offer from God to each single person. According to Jesus each person must individually believe and invite Him into their life as personal Lord and Saviour as stated in John 14:6: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; no man can come unto the Father except through Me.”
Thus, it becomes an act of individual free-will to believe by faith that Jesus is the Divine Son of God and Saviour of mankind.

Here is how Jesus’ message can be broadcast to the whole world while being aimed narrowly for an individual decision that must be made by each person:

1. Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matthew 7:14)

2. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.(Matthew 7:21)

3. Jesus answered and said..., Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3)

4. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20)

5. I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
(Luke 13:5)

6. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
(John 3:16)

7. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (Romans 8:1)
