This is not news. Priests already have this authority. So I'm missing your faux outrage, should they be stoned?

Why should priests or popes have to "officially" forgive abortion? Any woman that participates in such a deed can go directly to the source of forgiveness, and doesn't need any man telling her she is forgiven.

Just another area of disagreement for us. Freefaller's assessment that the rcc, under the current occupant of the Vatican, is picking up steam toward a socialist, secular system of religion.

Schism, anyone?

All sins are. However, if one is going to confession three times a week confessing the viewing of porn or any other repeated sin, there is a problem

Is the problem in the confessing of sin to another man or the porn?

Is birth control forgiven too?

You don't seem to grasp the distinction between forgiveness and condemnation of sin.

All that is required for forgiveness (depending upon your specific brand of Christianity) is a recognition that what you did was wrong, a desire for forgiveness, and a belief in Jesus (and that he died for your sins). If you can forgive a serial killer, you can forgive someone who had an abortion.

Oh, okay, so if forgiveness comes from Jesus. Where does condemnation come from?

I agree...that is unless one can find a way to go to confession seven times a week. Then I'd be OK..no problem.

When I heard this story this morning.... I got to thinking about the self condemnation that comes with abortion.

Humans make decisions over and over again every single day. The decision to have an abortion is a decision that is rarely taken lightly. After the abortion, many women feel they made a mistake. They hear someone, like me, calling abortion murder. At first they say I am a vile person.... but for many that changes to self condemnation. It may only take minutes... but then again it may take years. I know a woman who was going to have an abortion but opted to have the baby and try to raise it. That didn't work out so she gave the baby up to be adopted by someone who understood how she was trying to do the right thing. The woman who raised her baby always left the door open for the mother and baby to have a relationship. Today... the mother and the baby [22 years later] barely speak. They had an argument many years ago.... even tho the adoptive mother would love to see the biological mother and child get along.... she listens to both express their sadness about their relationship [or lack thereof].

In order to heal, you have to get over the hurt. Some people need a priest or a preacher to tell them it's ok to stop beating themselves up. Others can get that authority from the Word. Still others, unfortunately, have no one to help them out of the horrible self condemnation and they just live with it until they die.

I think it's a good thing that it's ok for the women to go to the priest if they want to. I'm glad the Catholic Church has made this move....
