"A man was crushed to death when a giant crucifix dedicated to Pope John Paul II collapsed and fell on him, ITV News reports. The accident came just days before a historic canonization that will see the late pope declared a saint.

The 98-foot-high wooden and concrete cross fell during a ceremony in the Italian Alpine village of Cevo on Thursday, killing 21-year-old student Marco Gusmini. Another man was taken to hospital."

So only 3 days before John Paul II's canonization, a crucifix monument dedicated to his memory, falls and kills one of the faithful visiting the site.

One could interpret this as at least a bad omen - if not a demonic one. But it's a safe bet the Vatican and Catholics will have nothing to say about this.

On the other hand, finding jesus's image in a pancake... well that is some sort of miracle...and indicative of him communicating to one of the faithful.

I'm pretty sure the Vatican and a vast majority of Catholics have nothing to say about the pancake either.

I've got love bug splats on my windshield, that if you look at them into the sun they could look like an image of Jesus. But probably just a love bug splat.

Ok, I'll give you that. But lets just say to illustrate a point, that had this cross not fallen, but instead an image of Christ or John Paul II had appeared in the concrete at it's base, this miracle would have been trumpeted around the world.

"Let's just say" that it usually takes more than an image in the concrete (or a pancake) for the Vatican to declare it a miracle. As for the general populous, Catholic or no, maybe or maybe not. As for the press, undoubtedly.

Yes, the press would have been all over this. But the tragedy didn't make the nightly news or headlines, because the majority of the press tends to give religion a 'free pass' when it comes to anything that will be viewed negatively. Of course, with the exception of the pedophile priest issue, or the Westboro Baptist church extremist activities which the nation will absolutely tune in for.

Apparently, NBC News didn't have any problem reporting it, and nhboy (and you and me) had no problem "tuning in" so to speak. Would you even consider this worthy of a nightly news headline? I wouldn't. I don't think religion gets a free pass regarding negative exposure. In fact, I think religion gets a lot of negative exposure, perhaps more so than the positive, but that could just be a difference in our perspectives.

Agreed, our perspectives play a role. I just watched the Today show this morning where they talked about John Paul II's canonization in glowing terms. Guess I should just resign myself to the fact that the goings-on in the Catholic faith will still get a lot of press, albeit both negative and positive, but I will tend to cringe when it is positive, and you will cringe when it is negative. Oh well.
