Pope says weapons manufacturers can't call themselves Christian

TURIN, Italy (Reuters) - People who manufacture weapons or invest in weapons industries are hypocrites if they call themselves Christian, Pope Francis said on Sunday.

Francis issued his toughest condemnation to date of the weapons industry at a rally of thousands of young people at the end of the first day of his trip to the Italian city of Turin.

"If you trust only men you have lost," he told the young people in a long, rambling talk about war, trust and politics after putting aside his prepared address.

"It makes me think of ... people, managers, businessmen who call themselves Christian and they manufacture weapons. That leads to a bit a distrust, doesn't it?" he said to applause.

He also criticized those who invest in weapons industries, saying "duplicity is the currency of today ... they say one thing and do another."

Francis also built on comments he has made in the past about events during the first and second world wars.

He spoke of the "tragedy of the Shoah," using the Hebrew term for the Holocaust.

I wonder what he would say of an organization that was involved in decades of pedophilia and a hierarchy that protected the abusers by moving them around to abuse again and again.

I'm Catholic, but I disagree with the Pope on this. Who is he to say we're not Christians? I own a gun. I like to target shoot and I hunt same as anyone else does in any other sport. I can kill you with my golf clubs so condemn all the golf club manufacturers and because I own golf clubs I must not be a Christian.

So, which weapon maker is going to get a special dispensation to arm the Swiss Gaurds? Or tell the Pope, sorry, we'll have to recall all the weaponry that protects you and yours. I like this guy, I really do, I think he's generally speaking the most realistic Pope in living memory, but I think he didn't parse this out right.

Yeah, that. He is way off on this one, and becoming more and more obvious that he wants his catholics to vote liberal left on thewse topics - gun control or confiscation, climate change, redistribute the wealth, etc.

I think he said exactly what he felt - only the govt and leaders like him deserve protection, while the rest can only be protected by them.
