Portis-Bailey...

...alright folks, enough with the baseball crap. Back to what's important!

Seems the deal will be done and for money that would have more or less kept Champ. Bottom line, Champ didn't want to be here, agreed?

So, Portis is a wash cap wise but costs a #2. I still say a great running back having a great year is worth more than a great corner having a great year. Agreed?

The money is insane in any event and either guy is one play from being out for the year. My buyers remorse now is that Denver is noted for smaller, quick linemen, pulls traps etc. Portis won't get that here. We are Hogs. Wrong guy? Thoughts?

Kearse. I've read he wants a $18 million dollar signing bonus.
Get him? Forget him?

Is the money being thrown around by our Skins turning us into an irretrievable joke, Joe Gibbs or no Joe Gibbs?

I want to be a fan of a team like the Pats or the Panthers. Teams that are TEAMS, built from the inside, maybe one or two key free agents, great coaching.

I'm scared I'm stuck rooting for a corporation.

I don't think you have any worries with the O-line Larry, because after all, the counter-trey was really nothing more than a sweep with a misdirection step at the beginning and cut back inside sooner.

And Portis will be fine between the tackles

Football season!
With the right line, there is a chance for anyone to be a good runner. Remember the last skins superbowl? I think Tigger could have ran through those holes and had over 100 yards.

A shutdown corner is hard to come by. We have been spoiled by having guys like Green who stayed with the redskins so many years and was a great cb. We tried to groom a sidekick for him throughout his career, and were met with only limited success.

But yes, it is important for players to "want" to be here, but then again it is a JOB. So even if he didn't want to be here, he still played his heart out and you have to appreciate that (of course you could argue he gave it all to bolster his trade ability)

We'll see what happens.

...to clarify, I don't doubt Bailey's commitment one bit. The guy pretty much made it known he wasn't happy with what the Skins were offering early last season and he played his ass off all year and played hurt to.

Jerry Stackhouse he ain't.

Don, my worry is that the 'big back' way of the Hogs needs a patient RB who waits for the blocking to develop. From what I've seen on film (very little) Portis wants to get to a hole and make a decision RIGHT NOW.

That was the beauty of counter trey vs. a traditional pull or trap. Trey was this wall of manhood lumbering around the end and you could see it developing and Riggo or Rodgers or Riggs would just kinda follow them until they'd buried everyone. A guard pulling like the old Steelers and now the Broncs is QUICK, the hole is gone very soon.

Hope you're right!

Agreed and I think there is more to the story why the skins didn't press to keep him.

A shutdown corner is way more valuable than a running back, BUT Champ was not a shutdown corner last year. Disinterest on his part last year??

Portis is a great runner, he'll perform if healthy. Gibbs will make sure that he is put in the right position to do what he does best.

Kearse. I've read he wants a $18 million dollar signing bonus.

I would forget Kearse, too much money, but they definitely need 2 guys on the d-line..Of course, the only decent d-coach they had in last 10 yrs was Marvin, so possibly coaching will improve what they have??

Skins have been an irretrievable joke since Snyder got there, I find it hard to believe that Portis cost that much to sign plus having to give the Broncos a 2nd round pick. All I can say is I have blind faith in Gibbs, I have to believe he has a master plan..Last year was the pits, a total embarrassment.

...convince me that a shutdown corner is more valuable than a top RB.

If you could have Portis or a corner of you choice, name 'em, for about the same money, who would you take?

When I saw Champ Bailey talking about how he was a first rate player and deserved first rate treatment all I could think about was how Joe Gibbs would have responded to that. Maybe something like this: "Son, sit your gee-golly backside down and listen to me, I'm in the Hall of Fame and have three Super Bowl rings." Maybe that is why Mr. Big Head Bailey is no longer in DC and I am damn glad. Clinton Portis will help this offense and make Gibbs' offense flow. He is definitely a good match for us.
