ELLICOTT CITY, Md. - Marijuana packaged in yellow, smiley face gumballs found at Howard High School was a first for local, state and federal investigators.

Howard County police confiscated the "Greenades" gumballs in January at the Ellicott City school. The federal Drug Enforcement Agency recently released an intelligence bulletin about them.

Police charged three 17-year-old students after a teacher alerted a school resource officer. She told the officer that she saw a student give a plastic bag that the teacher believed contained drugs to another student.

The officer seized the bag, which contained two "candy balls" wrapped in foil, police said. Instructions on the foil told users to chew for 30 minutes to 1 hour "before you would like receive your high" and to "chew for as long as possible, then swallow."

A state police lab found that each gumball contained approximately 1 gram of marijuana. Officers charged two students with distribution of drugs on school property and a third with possession of marijuana.

When marijuana is smoked, the blood supply of the lungs absorb the THC. The blood then moves to the heart where it increases the heart rate. If the marijuana is eaten, less THC gets to the brain and takes longer to get there. The amount of THC in the body would be less for the amount of marijuana eaten, however, since it takes longer to work, users are likely to consume more marijuana than they would normally smoke. High levels of THC can cause hallucinogen-like experiences that smokers are less likely to feel.

Luckily, if someone were to eat a "gumball" thinking it was real candy they could easily enough detect something out of place and spit it out before it had an effect on them.

Luckily, if someone were to eat a "gumball" thinking it was real candy they could easily enough detect something out of place and spit it out before it had an effect on them.

It seems like that would be the preferred way to go if one is a kid trying to hide the act from their parents. Once eaten there would be no sign that you had the stuff.

I didn't smoke like so many kids did. The pills were easier for me. I remember the name of the kid that had them...Danny Martell..

Where did he end up?

A former co-worker told me a story about a pothead he knew during high school. Typical failure... at the time. Many years later he has worked his way into being a highly-respected member of his local police department (near Richmond).

:shrug: I do not know. I'm talking 1968-69 here I didn't experiment that much.

But I did start my wino career drinking Bali Hai and Boone's Farm in the cornfield behind our house And my vodka career drinking Tango at school dances. How I miss those innocent days
