potty training a pup

I have a 10 week old miniature pinscher and seem to be having a hard time housebreaking him. I give him a treat when he does his business outside, but we have to really watch him inside. He hasn't gotten the idea to go to the door yet. I try to get him to go to the door but he just sits there and looks at me. Any suggestions/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

He's a baby. It can take a long time to completely housebreak a puppy.

You need to confine him to a small area..crates are great when you cannot watch him. You need to figure out what his "schedule" is. Take him out after eating, after playing..when he wakes up. Carrying him outside is good and put him in the spot you would prefer he get used to. Use a word "go potty" or something like that and when he does, praise him. Outside time should be for pottying only until he gets the general idea.

The best training is NOT to let him have accidents in your home.

You can also train with bells.
Like old fashion christmas bells (leather strap 5/6 bells) on your door
everytime you take him out put his paw up to the bells and ring them and say potty, he will soon associate the sound of the bells with going potty and begin to ring them when he needs to go.

This is how my dogs are trained, it took me less than 3 days with the first one and the rest followed her lead as they came along..

Now, my puppy has started wetting in his crate at night. I realize that small dogs can't hold it as long as larger dogs, but he went for about 4-5 nights without doing it. I tried putting him in a larger crate so his bed is on one end and I put newspaper on the other end. I don't know if I did right or not, but I was tired of the wet towels/blankets every morning. Any advice/suggestions?

Do you realize one of the main reasons pets are turned into the shelter is because they couldn't be house trained....[/QUOTE]

OMG thats crazy! What a silly reason. Yeah you definitely have to take your time with them...accident are bound to happen the first several months or so. Maybe where the dog sleep is too big of an area? THe crate should be just big enough for them and no extra, or big messes can happen in the crate! Oh man those were some fun times with our boston.....haha!

I had him in a small crate but he still wet in it. Maybe he just can't hold it long enough. If I put him in a smaller crate, he will be in a shoe box!

You should keep him in the smaller crate but take him out more often. Don't expect him to hold it for more hours than he is months old. Does that make sense? If he's 3 months, don't make him hold it for more than 3 hours. If you keep him in the small crate and take him out more often, he shouldn't wet in his crate. Putting him in the large crate will encourage him to use the potty.

Actually, a dog should be able to hold it one hour more than he is months old. Since your puppy is 2.5 months old, he should be able to hold it for 3 hours, no problem. But do not leave him in there any longer and expect him to hold it. Nor get mad at him if he has an accident. Also, NEVER, EVER clean up a mess your dog has made, in front of the dog. Remove the dog from the room and then clean up the mess. You don't want to bring attention to it. Puppies learn a lot from observation.

Keep him in a small crate because dogs HATE to make a mess where they sleep. They will mess their crate if it is big enough to escape the mess (i.e., bed on one side, newspaper on the other. The crate should be big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around, but THAT'S IT! Don't put super absorbant pillows or blankets in the crate. If the puppy has a mess and feels it, he will try and hold it a little longer next time around to avoid that same experience.

Is there anyone who can let your puppy outside every 3-4 hrs?

I never get mad at him for having an accident. I realize he is just a puppy and can't hold it for long. I had thought of the pee pads for now, until he gets older. Unfortunately, I work all day and can't get home to let him out in the middle of the day. I try to as much as possible. We really work with him when we are there.

Pay somebody to come in to take him out. Don't use the pee pads, you are just training him that it is okay to pee in his crate or in the house.

Puppy pads.........
Best thing ever. My girl goes on her little pad a couple times a day. If we take her out somewhere I take a pad and no matter were I set it she will do her buisness. I even mad a custom pad protector incase she misses(matches the bathroom). Pad stays in the bathroom. Dog does her buisness in the bathroom.
